Protection of workbook

I

Ille

Dear All,
I'm working wiht Excel 2003 and Windows XP.
I have created a workbook. I would like to give it to other people but the
users of it should only be able to: select entries from drop-down lists,
delete entries and hide cells.
My questions are:
1) Can I hide the fomulas that I have used?
2) How can I prevent that the workbook will be changed?
Thank you very much in advance.

1) Can I hide the fomulas that I have used?
To hide formulas, check Hide*, then apply Tools > Protect Sheet
(To hide & protect formulas, check both Locked* & Hide*, then protect sheet)
*via Format > Cells > Protection tab

You can allow users to change only the range you allow them to...
Users can see the cell formula if they are able to navigate to that cell...
What you can do is have your formula in, say, Z1 (hide it) and put =Z1 in
the cell visible to users.
You need to play around to get what you want...

Hi,

Just in case you don't follow what was said:

1. To hide the formulas from viewing:
- Select a range of cells or the whole sheet and choose
- Format, Cells, Protection tab, check the Hidden box.

This will not hide any formulas until you turn on protection!

2. To protect the sheet from being changed (and to hide the formulas in the
cell you selected above) choose
Tools, Protection, Protect Sheet
- add a password and confirm it (write it down for you to remember)

A few points
- The first feature applies to a selected range not to the entire sheet
unless you select the entire sheet
- The Protect sheet command applies to a sheet not to the entire workbook,
you would need to do this for each sheet you wanted protected in your
workbook .

If this is helpful, please click the Yes button

Hi Sheeloo,

"Users can see the cell formula if they are able to navigate to that cell."
This is not the case if you apply the Hidden option as Max described, and
spreadsheet protection is on.

Thanks Shane...

You are right... The reason I did not propose that option was because I
thought Ille wanted the users to be able to modify the cell containing the
formula...

search datapig in google and it has a little video showing how to protect. It
shows exactly how to do this with clear audio too. Well worth a peek!

At first: thank you.
But it does not really work. I have a range of cells which I want to be
hidden (because of the formulas). In other parts of the worksheet the users
can enter, delete, etc etc. I select the range of cells, choose Hide in the
format menu, cells, protection tab. And then I choose menu extras,
protection, sheetprotection and whatever I click, the whole sheet is
protected! But I only want some ranges to be protected. What do I wrong?
