Provied Import/Export between Project 2007 and Primavera Suretrak

I work for a General contracting company. Often contracts require that we
use Primavera Suretrak software to provide updates on construction projects.
It would be helpful for Microsoft to provide export from Project to Suretrak
so that we could track projects using Microsoft Project and then export to
Suretrak to provide updates to fulfill the conditions of the contract.

Hi Adam,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You're asking a bit much here! There are well ove 100 different project
management software programmes and you can't expect Microsoft to provide for
them all. As it is, Project allows you to save as a variety of formats to
meet its own software suite. I wonder why Primevera does not provide an
importing facitilty from Project?

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

We are using Primavera 5 and it will import (.mpp .mpx .mpd. mdb .mpt) or
export (.mpx .mpp .xml) MS Project files...

Adam, perhaps 5 years ago I had a huge schedule created in MS 2000 per my
customer's request. Unfortunately the ultimate customer (DOE) wanted the
schedule in Primavera. In an attempt to meet in the middle DOE agreed I could
use SureTrak. SureTrak allowed a MS Project 98 file saved into a certain
format to be imported, unfortunately what type escapes me now. It would seem
if it was possible that many years ago that it could be done again, although
MSP 98 might be darn hard to find now.

Mike,
I hate to disagree with you, but Project 98 had the option to save Project
files in the MPX format used to share files between Project and Suretrak. I
think all anyone is asking is that Microsoft give us back this option.
As a smaller contractor we use MS Project for the ease of use and the cost
difference . The larger contractors we work for use Primavera or Suretrak
and we need a way to share the files. So, on behalf of all the "little
guys", give us back our MPX file conversion option.

I suggest, Adam, you address your remarks directly to Microsoft via their
Project support website where there is the option for feedback. I'm no
expert on the inns and outs, but I believe the mpx format is obsolete and
that's why it was dropped. Have you asked Primavera and Suretrak to provide
the facility to import Project 2007 files?

Hi Jim,

To just jump in -- can Suretrak read XML? I suggest that XML is
actually the preferred method - MPX is a proprietary file type XML is
*mostly* a standard.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I am trying to import files from Primavera Project and finding it onerous.
Though I use Microsoft projects exculsively, I would like to see Microsoft
creating tools to use other people, rather than expect everyone else to
accommodate Microsoft. As the customer, being caught in the middle
unacceptable. Please remember who you are trying to serve. Thanks.

Thanks for your comments Adam. I and the other MVPs don't work for
Microsoft and are fiercely independent from them! If you want to get at
Microsoft, then follow the feedback link on their Project website. Good
luck!

Microsoft has provided the ability to import/export a number of formats
useable by other products - if Primevera doesn't fit any of them, there's
nothing we can do about it.
