PS 2003 Prioritising resources

I have a group of four resources all doing the same group of tasks, however
within that group there are prefferred resources for certain tasks. I am
trying to get Project to automatically assign the available resources using
the substitution wizard.

In other word - use resource 1 for task type A, however if Resource 1 is
overallocated, then use resource 2 etc.

I have tried this using Enterprise resources and Enerprise resource codes,
however this seems to be more of a grouping function and not a prefference
function.

Dave,

To my experience (and I' ve implemented more than a dozen EPM2003/2007
configs) no customer that I know is using the automatic substituion of
resources. It is ok to use outline codes to map generic resources to
potential resources, however deciding who will be part of my project team is
typically done manually with or without a comporate procedure(s).

Thanks for that, however I have a team of four resources which I need to
plan for up to 40 tasks in a month (split into 5 different skill sets).
While all resources are able to do any (or most) of the tasks there are some
that are better at one skill while others are better at another skill.

The problem I have is assigning the individual recources to the tasks, while
being able to see the base line (or earliest possible start date) for each
task. So even whith levelling if the wrong resource is allocated to a task
the best result is not always achieved.

One other smaller problem is that some of these tasks can not happen at the
same time, however it does not matter which one happens first and at times a
days overlap would not be an issue (but I can't seem to constrain these as
required). Once again as I am allocating these resources I am unable to see
these relationships.

To make a long story short, trying to control 40 2 to 3 day long tasks
manually takes longer than doing the job itself..........or am I missing
something!

Project has no ability to optimize based on a set of resource rules or skill weightings.
There is no constriant which is "either one first but not at the same time."
In practice I have my resources leave me 15 minutes on a task that they have done
out of order so as not to unknowingly nullify any finish to start constraint.

Thanks all for the input.
