PS 2007: New Work Space Template problem

J

Jonathan H

Hello,

I've created a new Work Space Template following
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms503640.aspx

All went well apparently.

However when I have subsequently created new projects they don't appear to
link to the workspace. The workspace is created, but Project doesn't
recognise it.
When I navigate to Server Settings -> Project Workspaces and try to Edit
Site Address I get the following error:
"The web site does not exist or is not configured for Project Server. Enter
a Web site that has been extended with a PRoject Server compatible template."

I have a colleague who has followed the exact steps on a stand-alone system
and doesn't have this problem. I've investigated both systems and can see
nothing obvious that is different.

Has anyone got any ideas why this is happening, and how I can fix it?

Many thanks,

Jonathan

Sounds like you must have created your workspace template while the
workspace was still attached to a project plan. If you followed the correct
instructions, they would have either shown you how to set up a Workspace
site from the top PWA site that was never attached to a project plan or they
would have instructed you to detach the workspace from the project plan once
you have finished modifying it and were ready to save the site as a
template.

The workspace must not be attached to a project plan right before you save
the site as a template.

Another word of caution in modifying the site template in 2007 is not to
mess with the default fields for Issues and Risks as you will start getting
synchronization issues with the reporting database each time you publish
your project plan. This is because of some hard-coded references to
specific fields and dropdown values in Issues and Risks.

You might have got it there, I'm not sure I did detach the Work Space I based
the template on. In fact I'm not sure how, so I'll re-read that document.

Interestingly I've spotted that Issues and Risks issue before. I think I've
taken steps to avoid it, but until I can get it all to work then I can't
prove it.

Great answer, thanks Jonathan!

Oh, hang on, just had another thought.

My colleage registered the template I created. It worked for him on his PS
instance, but not on mine. Would this behaviour indicate that it was not an
attached workspace that was the original cause of the problem?

Thanks,

Jonathan
