PS\MOSS SETUP - one application pool\content database or many?

D

Daniel Beale

Hi All,

I am involved in setting up PS 2007 in a small farm environment. I have
followed the MS TechNet document "Deploy Office SharePoint Sever 2007 and
Office Project Server to a new environment". The deployment was successful.

The environment is 1 2003 Server running SQL Server 2005 and another running
MOSS and Project Server 2007 (and IIS).
The setup is for Development and testing purposes, prior to installation in
the production environment.

I have some unresolved ?'s regarding the configuration of the Web
Applications and Sql Server Databases?

Web Applications that were created along the way. (1) (2) (3).
(1) Project Web Access site
The tech doc says to create a new application pool but does not mention the
new associated database (I called it WSS_Content_pwa)

(2) Shared Service Home\Admin site
NOW:- The tech doc says to create a new application pool but does not
mention the new associated database (I called it WSS_Content_SSPAdmin). The
note next to the 'Database Name' entry recommends that this database name
should always be the default "WSS_Content" for most cases, and only under
advanced scenarios should it be changed.
I got an error when trying to choose an 'existing database' for a new
WebApplication\application pool when leaving the database name as
"WSS_Content" as recommended - hence my using different databases for each
Web Application.

Which brings me to my first question, is the database linked to the
application pool?

(3) MySite
Required to be created when creating the shared service provider (also not
mentioned in the tech doc)
Once again I chose to create a new application pool and database
(WSS_Content_MySite)

Should I be configuring all of my 3 web sites to use the one application
pool and so the one database (WSS_Content)?

Your comments will be appreciated.

Daniel.
