PS2 -> USB ??

Not really an access problem - well it is for me as I'm creating an MICR
process to bringing in data into a large DB and don't really want to fail due
to lack of hardware in a year or so.

I have looked all over (MS, google, etc) and can't find the answer. I have
heard that PS2's are being replaced by USB ports and that soon "old style"
keyboard wedge interface will not be available on PS2 and that soon
everything will be serial interface (serial ascii). I have just got the 1st
samle hardware for PS2 and it's basically plug-and-play, but if the ports
will not be available soon that's not much use.

I understand there are loads of midstream "boxes" available but these are
not much use as the databases are used quite a bit off site.

Does anyone have links to sites with info about this phasing out of PS2's.
Would be a really big help in planning my next move with this new application.

What are you talking about? Are you saying that a PS2 keyboard/Mouse would
affect your Access database if replaced by USB keyboard/Mouse? Unlikely.

Farther down he has a post about having a MICR hooked up to his computer,
and using it as an input device into his Access DB. From thread, I am going
to fathom a guess that his MICR unit hooks up inline with a PS2 keyboard,
and he is concerned about the 'legacy' ports demise in the near future.

I haven't seen too much of a push to eliminate the legacy ports, and I think
you'll be safe for at least couple of years. There are ps2 to usb adapters
available, and you can probably get the ps2 ports on a pci card as well. I
am sure that there are usb based MICR readers available, you may want to
look into those if you are truly concerned

I think I may be being a little bit cautious - each reader / scanner costs
over £2500 (we need at least 12 - one for each office). There are cheaper
ones but they tend not to duplex scan or handle to same volume and banks
reduce charges for corporate clients if they maintain their own hard copy of
payments. So it worth getting the duplex scanners (oh, hard copy means, in
this case, that we "could" produce a hard copy, if needed).

I need to produce a report showing the life of the system. Of course I can
set up the USB serial (bit more codeing to parse the data to start thats all)
but if any hardware upgrades will only have USB then I will need to work to
this. I was just to see if anyone knows a site with details of the PS2 "fade
out".

Oh yes - Norman. MICR scanners don't output the same stream as either
keyboards or mouses (or is it mice) - I have always found it better to ask if
you don't know than just guess - hense the question, sorry if it seemed to
upset you.
