PS2007: checking out docs to local or server??

In a document library, when one checks out a document, a window appear asking
me to "use my local drafts folder" or not (toggle on/off). What is the
purpose of using my local drafts?? i.e. why would i use my local drafts
folder instead of just checking the document to the project server?? what is
the advantage of using my local drafts folder? I thought it was speed as it
would be faster to save changes to my local, but all saves are done to the
server.... Please advise.

Thanks.

Thanks Gary, I guess what i was trying to find out with the second post is
the difference between checking out to the local "Sharepoint Drafts" folder
or to the server. There is an option to use the local drafts folder or not,
I don't know what the best option is because i don't know the difference.
How does the system behave if I use the local drafts folder and how if I
don't use it??

I use local drafts because I'm not online all the time. That means that the
latest version is subject to the backup and recovery standards of the
client, and not the server. I'm uncertain of performance differences, but
local is usually better in this regard. I think you need to decide how your
users want to work.
