.pst files, Windows synchonization, Catch-22

Posting for advice on a dilema. Am I missing a "reasonable" work
around for this?

1. I have an Exchange user that archives old mail to a .pst file on C:
drive.
2. C: drive is not redundant, so user wishes to put .pst file on
network share that is backed up nightly (which Microsoft KB articles
say is a bad idea due to corruption possibilites).
3. User also wants to synchronize network share for offline use so he
can access .pst file offline.
4. Windows does not allow synchronization of .pst (or .ost) files
(most likely due to same corruption issue spoke of in MS KB article).
5. Putting all mail in Offline files in Outlook not an option because
user has over 2GB of data on Exchange which is the limit for .ost
files (which then causes Outlook synchronization problems). 2GB limit
not an issue with archive .pst files because you can split the data
into smaller .pst files.

This is an "executive"-type, thus the amount of email data cannot be
culled, nor can I expect this person to zip their archive file and
manually move it to the network share on a regular basis.

This seems to be a major issue with Outlook. How can I get redundancy
of an archive without having to manually change the format of the
archive (for example zip it up)?

Thanks.

Upgrade to Office 2003/Outlook 2003. (OST/PST file size limits increase to
20+GB when on a NTFS formatted partition. User must be on Windows 2000
(SP3) or newer)

If upgrade is not possible, then keep mail on Exchange server and control
what is synchronized via filters on each folder.

That is what I was afraid of.

Thanks for the reply.

Due to the Swen virus, all e-mails sent to this account will be deleted
w/out reading.
