.pst on network drive

Hi,



I know this is a well discussed subject but I still would appreciate some
recommendations or suggestions. We are running a small network with only 7
computers and one server. The server's only purpose is to share and backup
user files. Today we are all running oulook locally and therefore there is
no backup on the mail. As I have understood it's not a good idea to put the
..pst file on a network drive because it could cause the file to be corrupt?
But it still seems that a lot of people are doing it anyway. Now my question
is, can I also do this due my network is so small and how great is the risk
of doing it. Or must I setup an exchange server to be able to run safe and
back up the mails. Or is there any other solutions?

Have you considered closing outlook in the evening and running a backup
script that copies the pst to the server, where it will be included in the
network backup?

IMHO, the risk of corrupting the pst by using it over the network is greater
than the risk of losing it due to a drive failure... but since the network
problem is just about opening it over the wire, you can copy it to the
network.

It's sounds like an alternative, but it has to be totally automatic and how
will I configure the "move"-script to be run on shut down? Some of the .pst
files are about 300-400 Mb wich will take a moment to move?

not move, just copy. :) Look for a shutdown utility that allows you to do
things before shutting down or use a script to copy it before opening
outlook. I used to use a batch file that copied it to a network drive and
then it opened outlook. You can put it in the start menu to open outlook -
and if they close it through out the day, they'll use a desktop shortcut to
reopen.
