pst over 2gb in outlook 2000...will upgrade allow larger pst size

Am using Outlook 2000...and...unknowingly allowed my pst file to exceed
2gb...which causes the complete lockout of all that saved date...I used the
Microsoft crop tool and recovered the bulk of the messages...but all my
contact and address informations are missing...If one upgrades to Outlook
2003 or newer...will the original pst file be usable? (i.e. is there larger
pst allowance in newer versions?)...Will the contact and address data in the
original pst file survive the upgrade??...Is there some other way to recover
my contact and address data??...Why would anyone design a program to just
stop working...without any warning...based on the size of the data??...call
me pissed...

It will be usable but the max size of the pst file depends on the format of
the file, not necessarily the version of Outlook.
Your pst file is of the old ANSI type and is restricted to 2GB. (Why anyone
would want or need to keep emails in that quantity I don't know, but that's
beside the bye).

Outlook 2003 and 2007 use the Unicode format pst file which can go to 20GB
by default (again see above!).
Install 2003 or 2007, allow it to create a new pst file then open the old
pst file and copy your data across to the new.

Because Outlook is designed for Exchange where there are mailbox quotas. It
was never designed for users who keep emails from breakfast to eternity on
their HDD...

Data lost by the crop tool is permanently lost.
The original 2GB+ PST file cannot be used by any Outlook version.

The best way to recover your contacts is by using a backup of your PST
file before it reached the 2GB limit.
