Pub 2007 beta > Pub 98 > Pub 97 conversion

OK, I know I know...this is a very old topic. I've read thru some of
the older threads from years back but haven't seen anything very recent
regarding the ability to do this type of conversion. Probably because
I'm the only one left on the planet who needs to know how it can be
done. But sometimes as time goes on solutions appear. Here's hoping!

I just can't believe that this is a dead end. I have over the years
been able to convert just about everything I needed to convert but this
project has me stumped.

Here's what I have been able to do thus far.

The original files are Publisher 2003. I only have Pub 97. I installed
Office 2007 Pro beta trial (which contains Pub 2007 Beta trial) version
to save them as Pub 98 files. That actually went very smoothly. So I
thought if I could get them to Pub 98 file format, my work would be all
but done...nope.

So currently, I have a Pub 98 file which gives me "Publisher can not
load files from a different version" while opening it from within my
Pub 97 app. I read somewhere this morning here in this group that Pub
2000 files could be copied and pasted the old fashioned way into a Pub
97 document. I do not have Pub 2000 but was thinking that the Pub 2007
beta should do the trick. Right now, I'm on my computer at my store
working in the process of downloading the Office 2007 beta here to try
this copy/paste method out. The download is 440MB which on this slow
DSL line will take 8 hours. Does anyone else have another solution?

Limited tools I have:
Office 97 for Win
Pub 97 for Win
Office 2007 beta for Win
Office 2004 Mac
Mac w/ VPC 7 Win XP

Thanks in advance for any help/info

Publisher 97 will not open Publisher 98 files, nor can you convert any Publisher
file to 97.
You could buy a 98 version from somewhere like eBay.

Over the years I have converted newer files to 97 by opening Word, pasting the
newer Publisher file (in segments) to Word, copying the Word document and then
pasting to Publisher 97. Much of the format is lost but if it is important to
have your information as a Publisher document, then this is the only workaround
I know.

I believe Publisher 2000 is the last version you can do the copy and
paste solution from, due to the big differences in Publisher 2002 and
upwards.

No version of Publisher since 97 has been able to save as a 97-readable
file, which makes conversions a little difficult.

Publisher 97 is virtually a decade old - why not take the chance to upgrade?

Thanks everyone. Mary Sauer has apparently the only solution that
works perfectly.

Using Word 97, Pub 97, and the new Pub 2007 Beta, I was able to take my
Pub 2003 doc and create the identical doc in Pub 97. It wasn't a 50
page presentation or anything but atleast it works. Here's exactly how
I did it for any of you who need this done.
From the Pub 2007 Beta, I was able to open and then individually
copy/paste the formatted parts (text boxes & pics) of this Pub 2003
file into Word 97. I then saved that and selected the formatted parts
again one at a time from Word 97 and copied/pasted them into a new
blank Pub 97 doc. Yes, It' takes a few more steps than it should have
but the end result was reached succesfully. It really didn't take too
much time and I didn't run into any glitches.
