PUB to PDF

With Publisher 2000 I produced a 42 page theatre program with halftone black
and white photos and graphics which will be printed by a commercial printer
who needs PDF format. This commercial printer has Adobe Acrobat, Indesign
etc. I don't. Must I purhcase the expensive Adobe software to make the
conversion form PUB to PDF or can I use any of the conversion software
programs found on the internet, many of which are free and most of which are
under $100? If I can use non-Adobe software are there any susggested brands?

The commercial printer should also be capable of accepting PostScript that's
been saved to a file. Have them give you the ppd for the version of
Distiller they are using, install a printer on your system using the Acrobat
PPD and Adobe's PostScript Driver (available for download on Adobe's
website), set the printer to print to file, and then print your publisher
document to the Acrobat printer. This should create a PostScript file on
your hard drive. Send the commercial printer the postscript file and they
should be able to distill it into a PDF using Distiller.

Another alternative would be to find a commercial printer that is a member
of the Microsoft Publisher Service Provider Program who would be able to
accept your native Publisher document.

If you do much of this type of work, suggest you investigate PagePlus from Serif.
Serif has full CMYK and PDF etc. etc. for prepress all built in and is pure magic and a fair bit cheaper than MS Publisher.

Another suggestion. Find and download "CutePDFEvl.exe". I see it's
available from a number of sites. It's an early version of a PDF writer that
installs as a printer. I have set my "printer" to download fonts as
"Softfonts" and have found it work like a charm. You can even set paper size
and resolution. Has never been a disapointment. This was their early
totally free version with no expire. I have tried the newer trail version,
but have liked it less. It's good, but a bit too many functions, meaning
more clicks before I get the PDF file to disk. If you need more
functionality, like stacking PDF files, then the newer version does that.
And it's still fairly cheap compared to Adobe. I recommend either.
