Howdy all..

How does Pub handle embedded RGB images in a pub document destined for CMYK
output. Should I convert the images manually prior to using them or does Pub
automajickly convert them?

Doing a new booklet(program) in 2007 and don't remember what/how I handled
this last year in 2003

tnx

Publisher converts all convertable images (i.e. everything but EPS) to
RGB on import, then converts them itself to CMYK on output.

Import an RGB file to avoid a double-conversion. If you're unsatisfied
with the quality of Publisher's RGB>CMYK (many people are), then you can
use a CMYK EPS file.

okie doke...THANKS.

Still trying to decide if I'll use Publisher this year, or venture into the
semi-known InDesign (in which I am a noob with).

Just as an fyi, for I see you may be needing to go between MSPub and
InDesign.
Markzware has in beta a Pub2ID (Publisher to InDesign) conversion
tool.

The plug-in will only get you halfway there. Which is all it was designed to
do. There are a ton of Publisher features that are based on Windows and
Windows GDI that simply cannot be replicated on Macintosh or Windows in
InDesign. So at best you'll get the basic content and some of the layout.
You will still have plenty of work to do in InDesign though. Now having said
that, I'd still rather use the plug-in to convert the file to InDesign
rather than reset the document in its entirety.

If you don't want to go that route, just export a PDF from Publisher. Don't
bother with the Publisher conversion to CMYK. It's horrible and your blacks
will come out rich black. Same with your grays. It is far easier to let RGB
come out of Publisher and fix it in Acrobat with PitStop, Callas
pdfColorConvert (which does the best color conversion), or Quite A Box Of
Tricks. I've been doing this for years, it really is the easiest way of
dealing with them. Don't bother trying to work Publisher like you do
InDesign to set overprints and such. They only work when printing
separations from Publisher, not as composite. And realistically almost
everyone is still in a composite workflow. Save yourself the headaches...
