Public Folder Favorites show more contacts

Sepp!

We have an interesting problem that we can't figure out.
Using SBS2003 with three desktop clients + two laptops (laptops are the same
users as two of the desktops)
Setup a public folder for all of the contacts in the company.
Created a "favorites" link to the public folder so that the laptops will
self-sync and copy to the local machine, for use offline.
This works great for us,
But one of the desktops keeps doubling the contacts.
The public folder has (882) items.
On machine 1, the favorites folder also has (882).
On machine 2, the favorites folder has (1332).

We have deleted the favorites shortcut and cleared the offline items.
But when the favorites link to the public contact folder is remade, it is
back to (1332) items.

We are not sure where it is getting the items from, but any help will be
extreamly helpful.....
As M$ doesn't support this without $$$, we are kind of stuck.

If there is someway to search for an answer to this kind of question, please
let me know, I can't figure it out.

Thanks
SEPP!

Where exactly are you looking to convince yourself that there are 882 items
and not 1332.
I'm sure you are looking at some indicator and didn't count it yourself ;-)

Yes you are right, I am looking at the count "indicator" in () after the
favorites link.

**I found the answer - see end**

BUT it is more than that - this is also based on folder size from the
properties window.
If Outlook on Machine 1 shows the All Contacts folder as 6297kb, and the
Favorites folder as 6297kb, and the count is (861) then it is my
understanding that all the machines should match?
Machine 2, shows the SAME size for both folders, BUT shows the count at
(1158).

Of course to try and figure out which contacts are different would be
exceedingly difficult, so I am left with those two indicators to evaluate
what is going on.

I thought that it might have something to do with either the local cache or
the something to do with the contact folder in the local PST file. However,
the local pst file has 0 contacts in it, so that should not be it.

In poking around I have also found the Synchronization tab on the favorites
folder, and it lists the server folder as containing 1387 items.

*ANSWER*
However, to end this, it seems that what I may have been looking at is not
an indication of the number of items, but the number of "UNREAD" items in the
favorites folder - something which is not appropriate for a contacts folder!!!

BUT at least now we will know if someone in the office updates a contact, as
at that point, everyone will have a (1) in the at column.

Thanks for the replay though....

I have looked into this, and it is indeed the "indicator" that is the problem.

The folders are sync-ed correctly, what we are seeing is that the "read"
items is not "matched" - which now that we understand that the (882)&(1332)
numbers are the number of "un-read" items, it makes more sense - it just
doesn't make sense for a contacts folder!

So this problem is solved!

Thought that it was that already; that's why I asked how you counted? ;-)
The Status Bar is much more reliable to count or switching the "unread"
indicator to the "total items" indicator.
