Publish book using Word

I have almost completed an entire 300 page book in MS Word. I have
been told by the designers that they will have to convert this to
Pagemaker or Quark Express so that the formating can be done properly
but this is a very expensive affair.

If anyone has any experience in getting a book published using Word,
the pros and cons of using Word against any other publishing software
I like to hear about it. It would save me quite a bit of time, effort
and money.

Word is not a publishing software. It's a word processing software.
You can take you document to PDF and it can go straight to print from
there but if you are doing real publishing work, it's got to be
imported to a true publishing software.
