Publish doesn't always publish

We've seen the following on multiple occasions and are wondering if its a
known issue?

We are on MS Project Server 2007 through April CU.

Schedule is opened by it's owner and updates are made. Then File/Publish is
selected and the Save kicks off. The Save completes but the Publish never
starts.

We have to do these steps 2 and 3 times for some of our projects to get the
Publish to kick off.

Any thoughts?

Because of problems like this, I have always recommended that users do the
Save and Publish procedures as two separate steps. I recommend they click
File - Save, and then the Save operation is completed, then they click
File - Publish. I also recommend that users do not close their Microsoft
Project 2007 application until the publish operation is completed. Your
story proves my case. Beyond this, I know of no other way to work around
this issue. Hope this helps.

Dale,

Although I can accept that as a best practice, for months our PMs have
gotten used to simply hitting Publish and see both happen. Recently it seems
as that trick is consitently failing: Hitting Publish will save the project
but then terminate the process (publish never occurs.) Our PMs then close the
project, check it in, and assume that it published - which it did not.

Do you know if any setting or issue with Server 2007 (fully patched) that
would cause it to consistently work and then consistently NOT work?

To the best of my knowledge, I am not aware of any setting or issue that
would cause what you currently see. Because of this type of inconsistent
behavior in Microsoft Project with Project Server, I continue to recommend
the best practice of saving and publishing as two separate operations.
Doing so will guarantee that the publish operation succeeds. Hope this
helps.
