Publish subprojects from unpublished master?

G

Gil

Hi all,
We are using Project Server 2007.
I created 3 projects and published them to the server.
I created a master project and inserted all 3 projects as sub-
projects. I did NOT publish the master project.
I know I can make changes to the sub-projects and publish them from
the master project, but I don't want the master project to be
published to the server.
How can I do that? If I will press the "publish" button it will
publish all sub-projects AND the master, won't it?

Thanks for your help,
Gil

If you are using Project Server 2007, no harm will come from publishing the
master project. So, your only choices are:

1. Publish the master project, which publishes it and the subprojects as
well.
2. Open each subproject individually and publish it.

There is no way to publish only the subprojects from the master project.
Hope this helps.

Dale...

i just wondering....
If we create master project from 3 subproject like Gil did.
if i update progress from master project...can 3 individual project get
update too...
if can not...can we do that with adding relationship for individual to master?

thanks

Excellent question!

Suppose I have a master project containing three subprojects. When I open
the master project, Project Professional 2007 automatically opens each of
the subprojects in Read/Write mode. I can edit any of the three subprojects
as needed in the master project. When I save and publish, the changes are
saved and published for each of the subprojects automatically. If I close
the master project and open any one of the subprojects individually, I will
see the changes there.

The key to remember is that when you open a master project for editing, the
Project Professional 2007 automatically opens each subproject for editing as
well. Hope this helps.

Thanks dale...
btw i have another question:
base on
http://www.projectserverexperts.com/ProjectServerFAQKnowledgeBase/interprojectlinks.aspx
in the bottom of article "If your organization has disallowed saving a
master project in the Project Server database, then simply close the
temporary master project without saving it. When you are prompted to save the
changes to each subproject, however, click the Yes to All button. This action
will save your cross-project links in each linked project. The next time you
open one of these linked projects, you will see "ghost tasks" from the
predecessor and successor projects"
I tried to do that, i linked task between 2 project, but when i closed
temporary master project there weren't message that i should click "yes to
all button", so when i check each project there werent cross projects links,
there weren't "ghost tasks" from the predecessor and successor projects.
its there something that i miss...

Different story if i created master project, it succeed to cross project
links...

thanks

I have not idea why you didn't get a message asking you to save the
temporary master project. That is the default behavior and I have never
seen anything different. Sorry I can't be more help.
