Publisher 1.0 -- Can I do anything with these files?

Hi folks:

I've moved the administrative assistant at my Church into a new computer
with Windows XP and Office 2003. I installed Publisher 2003. But it turns out
that he has a couple of documents in Publisher 1 that he would really like to
avoid recreating. I fired up the old (Windows 98) computer and tried to open
these Publisher 1 files in Publisher 2000. But it doesn't recognize them. I
had hoped that if I could get them into Publisher 2000, I could then save
them and/or export them so that they could be read in Publisher 2003. But I
didn't have any luck.

Does anyone have any idea about what I can do to move these files to
Publisher 2003?

Publisher 2 is also on the Windows 98 computer, so I can use that if
necessary.

I'm not a publisher user, but I do use Office, and have done so for about 15
years. I'm a software engineer, but this thing has me stumped.

I'll be grateful for any help.

You are extremely fortunate, Publisher 2.0 was the last version that
could open Publisher 1.0 files. Open the files in Publisher 2.0 and save
them in the 2.0 file format. All versions through the earlier releases
of Publisher 2003 should then be able to open them. Open them all in
Publisher, and save them in the latest format, before installing the
updates for Publisher 2003 - the latest security patches remove support
for Publisher 2.0 files.

(It's possible I'm mistaken and 2002 was the last version that could
open 2.0 files; if that's the case, open in 2000 as an intermediary
instead. Note of course that there will be some formatting loss due to
the conversion.)

By the way, if you still have the original box and program disks for
Publisher 1, I'd be very interested in buying them off you.
