Publisher 2000 - error log file?

G

Gordon

Recently I have been having trouble opening publisher2000
files in publisher2000 (on the same Pc that created them).

I created file A, developed the document further and saved
it as file B and after final adjustments as file C (not
the actual filenames).

File A and C generate the following error when I open them
(either through windows explorer or the open dialog box in
Publisher)

"MSPUB.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log has been created"

Strangely file B does not produce this error and opens
normally.

I can find no reason why B should work and A and C should
not. Perhaps these files have somehow become corrupted?

I have tried repairing the Office installation and have
installed the SR-1 update to see if that would overwrite
the fault, but I think the problem must lie in the *.pub
documents.

Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas on how to
correct this?

Does anyone know where this supposed error log file is
created and what it's called (I've tried searching the
harddisk for the obvious)?

System info: Windows 2000, running F-Secure
antivirus/Backweb software, also SQL server.
Office 2000 Professional SR-1 9.00.9327 (via Add/Remove
Programs)...although publisher claims to be SR-3 through
Help>About in the application.

Thanks,
Gordon.

Hi Gordon ([email protected]),
in the Microsoft® newsgroups
you posted:

What if you start your computer in SAFE mode, will it open?

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the suggestion and I think I have got to the bottom of the
problem.

Both offending files opened in safe mode, but produced error meesages along
the lines that the specified printer was not found and that publisher would
specify another printer for use with the document.

Files A and C were both set to use (in that I had last printed on) a
network-shareed printer that was now unconnected to the network. File B was
set to use another printer on the network (which happens to be connected).

The quick solution was to load up in normal mode and delete the missing
printer (under control panel). Publisher opened the files with the same
error message as in safe mode (i.e. printer missing) and I specified another
printer and saved the files. They now open without a problem.

If you are interested in the details of the printer error messages I can
post them.

I would still be interested to know where office programs save their error
log files, if you can tell me. I imagine it might be useful in the future.

Thanks for the help.

Gordon.
