Publisher 2000, php and more

This is probably a bit off topic, but I am using Publisher 2000 to produce
my websites at the moment. I have enjoyed seeing what I can do with
Publisher 2000, and have enhanced my sites with java script and some minor
code editing. I have resisted changing to FrontPage or more suitable
software, primarily because I use Publisher extensively for print
publications in my work, and converting those documents to HTML versions
with the same themes has been fairly easy.

My current website host does not allow FrontPage extensions, so I have lived
thus far without forms on my site, but they recently installed antispam
software that is bouncing legitimate email, and I need to change hosts. As I
research hosts, I have decided that I need not only FrontPage extensions,
but also think I would like to start incorporating PHP, Perl etc. into my
website.

My first question is, can I incorporate the use of PHP, etc with Publisher
2000 using the insert code fragment feature of Publisher? Am I so ignorant
about how to use PHP that I am fooling myself about trying this? Am I going
to quickly become limited with and frustrated by what I can do with PHP, and
wish I had just switched to FrontPage or something else? Any comments or
suggestions?

Secondly, and really OT, can anyone suggest a webhost that they really like?
One that preferably supports PHP, FrontPage extensions, has more than one
MySQL database, and perhaps supports hosting more than one domain name? I am
ok with Unix, but would like the option to 'upgrade' to Windows without
moving to a different host. Yes, all this, plus I would like it for less
than $10 a month. Not asking for much am I...

Thanks for taking the time to read all this, and I would appreciate any and
all comments.

Don't know about creating web pages with 2000, but I do know my web host is very
good. I pay $166 for two years with the domain name thrown in for free.

For http://www.publishermvps.com we pay $9.95 a month for a Windows Server
(since we are using .Net), you can find the host link in my recommended
section at www.davidbartosik.com - That includes Microsoft SQL Server.

I also use this host for my other sites and client sites. They also offer a
less expensive plan.

What are you wanting to use PHP for? If you went to FrontPage and FPSE
technology you would likely gain functionality you are looking for without
the complexities of PHP.

Also keep in mind which side of the fence you want to be on as you mention
technologies that are competing. Do you want the Microsoft side of the
fence - Windows Server, FrontPage ( or .Net), HTTP protocal, SQL Server - or
do you want the open source side - Unix Server, mySQL, PHP - that's a
question you need to address for both the short term and your expected long
term needs.

Obviously since this is a Microsoft forum and I am a MS MVP, and I am a MS
technologies programmer you no doubt know which side of the fence I
recommend. But only you know your needs.

And yes, this is a titch OT. Ce la vie.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Mary. I didn't know you even read this
subgroup of Publisher. ipowerweb.com does get some good reviews...

Thanks David for taking the time to reply, and outlining the decisions I
need to make, so well. I had looked at your recommended webhost, but wasn't
aware that you hosted all your sites there. Given my great respect for both
you and Mary, I will look again.
