I've saved my doc as a web page - when I check out the properties on the Pub
file 23.1 MB, when I check out the properties when in the saved as web page
file, it's 320 KB. Why the differnce? Which do I need to know when I'm
buying web hosting space?

This will mainly because Publisher compresses the images and saves them at
screen resolution (so they will pixellate if you zoom in, unlike within
Publisher)
Make sure that you get the properties of the entire site (normally a file,
such as index.html, and then a folder, such as index_Files)
It is this total figure that you will need when buying webspace
