Publisher 2003, file attachments keeps dropping out of my web page

I have a 80 page web site and have numerous file attachments, photos etc....
Every once in a while I will do a command which will drop some of the files
but leave the outline of where the file attachment was, but I can not re-load
the attachment. I have to go in are re-attach the file. Is this a common
problem? I have been using Publisher for over a year and this just started,
and happen on three different machines. Does Publisher 2007 resolve this
issue if it is common? Is there a max number of web pages I can have in my
publisher file?
Thanks

David,

I have a publisher master document thats has all my pages which when
published for the web are saved as html files. My problem is while I am
working in the publisher file (before publishing to the web) some of the
photos that have been inserted or 'attached' to the publisher pages suddenly
disapear and do not show up, but an outline of the photo still remians where
the photo was. And it seems like the quality of the photos which do not
disappear change to a lower resolution, because they become a little fuzzy
instead of nice and clear like they were when attached to the document.

Is there a limit on the number of pagers publisher can handle for web sites?

Thanks

Dirk

partial answer; you need to resize and optimize your images before you place
them into a web design...don't let the program (Publisher or any other html
editor as well) to it. Freebie: IrFanview excellent program for this.

and again..there is no such thing as "attaching" an image to a web page.

ok, the images have been in the publisher file for over a year, and now this
is just starting, why are the images disappearing? Can I reload them, can't
seem to do that either after they disappear, thats about a 100 images which
need to be 'reloaded'.
Thanks for the help.

Dirk,

Du'oh...I should have figured that out..now I understand.

Publisher is extremely picky about video and printer drivers. You probably
need a new video driver.

Look here, the fourth FAQ
http://ed.mvps.org/Static.aspx?=Publisher/FAQs

And no, switching to 2007 will probably not help. If anything it is probably
more picky. Though problems with the video drivers are common, I have yet to
read a good explanation as to why a video driver will work fine for a long
time, and then suddenly not work correctly in Publisher. I suspect it has to
do with updates and patches from MSFT, which seem to fix one thing, only to
break something else. If there isn't a new video driver available for your
computer, I personally would try the Detect and Repair feature under Help,
and hope that would fix Publisher after being "broken" by a patch. I would
probably also try an uninstall and reinstall as a last ditch fix. Wish I had
a better answer for you.

There are only practical limits to the number of web pages in Publisher.
Navigation becomes more complicated and it becomes increasingly more
difficult to manage and update as it gets bigger. If you use the HTTP
uploading protocol, there is an incremental update feature in Publisher, but
it doesn't work with FTP uploading from what I understand. If you have
broadband, uploading a revised version of your large site won't take that
long, but dial-up connections would take forever with an 80 page site. Most
people that have sites as large as yours either move to a different program,
or they start building their sites with multiple Publisher files. I approach
this a bit different than David Bartosik does, and organize my site in
subfolders containing the html output from the different Publisher files,
but here is David's article about the subject: Building a web site with
multiple Publisher web publication files :
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/archive/2006/01/16/81264.aspx
It is a little dated but does explain the concept. When it says to "Save As"
to produce the html, that was applicable to Pub 2000. You "Publish to the
Web" to produce the html files in 2003 and 2007. If you want more
information about how I do it, post back.

You suggest moving to a different software program, any suggestions? Does
any of the microsoft software family import publisher files and is user
friendly?

Thanks

Nothing can work with Publisher html...you'd have to redo it in any editor
you try.
FrontPage and Expression Web can open Publisher created webs, but the code
is a nightmare and not worth trying to fix.

No, I am not suggesting moving to a different program...I just said that
many people do when their sites start getting larger and more complicated.
It all depends on the scope and goals you have for your site. Remember that
Publisher is a DTP that has the ability to convert your print documents to
html. It provides an easy way of giving you a web presence and reusing your
branded material in a web page. It is usually intended for relatively
simple, small static sites. Your site is no longer small, but is it static?
If you aren't going to be changing it that often, or don't need that many
dynamic features, then you can use Publisher...many do. I know of a number
of 100+ page sites built with Publisher, and sites that were built many
years ago and are still working for the person.

I did suggest that you consider breaking your site up and building it with
multiple Publisher files. But this is just to make it easier to manage. 90%
of my sites are static, so it is relatively easy to update just some
sections or pages if I build those sections with separate Pub files. One
requirement however is that you have to hand build a navigation system as
the navbar wizard that links all your pages together and creates your navbar
obviously won't work across multiple Pub files.

As to converting your Pub site, Rob's comments are consistent with what
others have said. While you can import the html code into Dreamweaver,
Expression and other code editors, the code that Publisher generates is so
different than anything else, you will probably find it impossible to edit,
and it will be easier to start over. As to different programs, I ran across
this site the other day...lots of options:

David,

Interesting link! Can't say I necessarily agree with the reviews:
WebPlus 10 - This is not a good design choice for a Web designer or
someone who wants to become one.

Someone should have told me that a couple of years ago. I might not have
used it to build 500 pages or so (not all in one site, though).

Mike,

Yeah...pretty harsh...I read that and thought about you. I don't necessarily
agree either...after all, Publisher isn't even listed <g>.
