Had a major crash and ghad to reload everything from scratch. My
Publisher 98 will not reinstall from tjhe installation CD. Message after
entering CD Key, name and organization just says installation
unsuccesful. I completely wiped out the previous installtion, cleaned
the Registry, etc. (Even though the Registry is cleaned each attampt to
install brings up my name and orgnaization. Where are they hiding?)
Still no go. Any thoughts?

Do you have an anti-virus software installed?

Memory-resident programs or TSR (terminate-and-stay-resident) utilities can
conflict with the installation or usage of Microsoft Publisher. For example, you
may have trouble installing Publisher if your computer is using virus-protection
software.

WORKAROUND
To successfully install Publisher, you may need to remove the virus- protection
software from memory by doing the following:

Disable your virus-protection software. (See your virus-protection software
manual for instructions.)

Restart the Publisher Setup program.

After Setup has completed, turn on your virus-protection software. (See your
virus-protection software manual for instructions.)

Thank you very much for your swift response. Unfortunately, it did not solve
the problem. The installation goes thrugh all the steps -- CD Key, name and
organization, EULA, etc. -- then pops up the error message and exits. I have
sent the error file to MS. Could I send it to you?

I am running an anti-virus program. It has never before caused a problem.
Nonetheless, I shut it down and then cleared the RAM. No help. Seems to me
there is something somewhere in the Registry that Setup looks at and does not
like. By the way, my first attempt at reinstallation was over the existing
files that remained in place after the crash. When I first tried to start
Publisher 98 after the crash I got a message that a dll was missing or
corrupt, which is when I tried to reinstall.

Publisher 98 had its problems.
One file that can cause setup issues is the biz1logo.jsp file. It could be in
your "My Documents" folder. If it is damaged it will be 4 KB, a healthy
biz1logo.jsp file is 7 KB.
Locate the Biz1logo.jsp file and rename it to Biz1logo.old. Restart Publisher.

try
Start, run, type

Regsvr32 qs98.dll

It does not exist. I assume that if I had succeeded in installing Publisher 98
it would exist.

No help there either.

I went through the Registry and removed every reference to MS Publisher 98
that I could find, even removing the name and organization so setup starts
from scratch. It goes through the stratup steps, syas "looking for installed
components" and fails. The Windows XP asks if I want to send an error log
message to Microsoft. I have done so every time but no response. I am at my
wits' end.

Well, I'll be hanged.

I copied the entire installtion CD to a directory on a drive other than C: I
then again attempted to install Publisher 98 with extactly the same result I
have been having trying to install for the CD. Zilch.

Amomg the zillions of files on the CD is MSPUB.EXE. Just for the heck of it I
clicked on it. Error message QS98.DLL missing or corrupt. I put a copy of
QS98.DLL in the directory C:\Publisher and then ran Regsvr32
c:\Publisher\QS98.DLL. The system told me that QS98 was successfully
registered. Then I clecked on MSPUB.EXE again.

Eureka! Publisher 98 started right up. It did not ask me for name and
organization. It did not present a EULA. It did nothing but instantly run from
the installation directory. The only entry in the Registry as far as I can see
is QS98.DLL.

I hope this is useful to someone.

I did a computer search for my biz1logo.jsp file, it was in My Pictures, but
then I have Vista. In my XP computer it is in My Documents. Find it on your
setup disk and drag a copy it to My Documents.

Have you a default printer? Have you tried installing in safe mode?
Is there an actual error message? What does it say when you click details?

I guess you posted this before you read my last post about success getting
Publisher 98 to run. The long and the short appears to be that Publisher 98
does not have to be installed, by which I mean files in strange places and
stuff splattered all over the Registry. The only item that needs to be
regisred in the Registry appears to be QS98.DLL.

The file biz1logo.jsp does not exist on my computer. Nowhere. Nohow.

Many, many thanks for your attention and help.

I am so glad you got it running. Someday you will have to upgrade to 2003 or 07.
In my opinion Publisher 98 was the worse of the lot. It did come with some great
clipart.
Thanks for your feedback. It is appreciated.

It appears that Windows does not actually install these files as we understand
the term. As far as I can see, there are no compressed files on the CD. The
Windows installer only registers the QS98.DLL file, asks a bunch of questions,
requires you to enter the CD Key number and then simply copies the files from
the CD to a directory on the hard drive. If, as I did, you just copy the
entire CD to your computer and then register the QS98.DLL file, you don't even
have to enter the CD Key or any other information. You bypass the Installer.
Which still doesn't tell me why I could not install it in the first place.

As for upgrading, Publisher 98 meets all my needs. Besides, Publisher is
notorious for not honoring files created by earlier versions of Publisher.
Been there, done that.
