Publisher 98 with Windows XP Home Edition: Conflicts + Help!

I have a new PC with Windows XP Home Edition as OS. I installed my Office 97 including Publisher 98 OK but I am having TERRIBLE problems with dropdown menus and other features (some of which are elsewhere too... For example my trusty WS_FTP LE no longer works and odd buttons in other programmes have "lost" their labels).

However, with Pub98 (which I use to build websites) the MAIN problems are that when I open menus, they have been "truncated" so bits are inaccessible. For example if I want to change to a different colour background or add wallpaper, that part of the menu is not accessible. Another problem is with Wordart. Open the dialogue and it (a) does not allow CR (b) does not scroll.

A combination of truncated menu PLUS no scrolling occurs when trying to add to the page description, chose a sound, etc. for both the site and each individual page.

PLEASE can anyone point me towards a reason and a solution? I truly cannot afford to upgrade to later editions of Publisher having already had to grovel to my bank manager for a new PC!

Thanks in advance - Janet Kaiser

Well, you have an unusual problem there. Publisher all versions runs
perfectly under Windows XP and WS_Ftp LE also does. I use it all the time.

Janet did this new PC come with Windows XP installed?

I can tell you categorically, there must be something awfully wrong on that
PC with the problems you are experiencing. It sounds like WinXP has not
been setup correctly with the proper video driver or something like that.

Possibly you have some junk garbage software like Symantec AV (anti virus)
installed or something else that is causing terrible problems.

Many thanks for your response! To answer your question, yes, it was a new system with Windows XP Home Edition pre-installed. I do not have Symantec, nor any odd programmes (as far as I know!) and any I have were working OK on my previous Win98 system. But since getting this PC in August, I have been having difficulties with various hardware as well as the metnioned software... Do not ask about my "old" scanner!(

I have tried un-installing all MS programmes and then re-installing. Publisher 97 seems to be working OK, but of course I cannot take my Pub98 files "back" to that and I seem to have forgotten how it worked anyway

Anyway,if you think that the problems are linked with the video driver (yes, I did have problems with that but they are supposedly solved now) what should I try out? I could use some specific information if I have to take this box back to the retailer AGAIN! I do not think I am his flavour of the month as it is

TIA for any recommendation

Janet it may be time to bite the bullet and find somebody who is competent
and knows what they are doing, and do a *COMPLETE* clean install of
everything from a clean hard drive.

There is no way the retailer is going to do much, if anything and certainly
will not spend the time to do a proper job.
Forget the retailer exists unless there is an actual hardware problem.

As a matter of interest, have you installed the XP SP1 service pack and all
the rest of the upgrades from the MS Windows Update website.

Hi Ms Publisher! Thanks... I am actually taking it in tomorrow, so that he can try it out with a different video card... I have quite a lot of faith in him, as it is a small shop with "personal service". Very nice in this day and age! I will be printing out various advice from folk to give me a bit of back-up. After taking a couple of months to set this beast up to what I want, I pale at the very idea of doing a reformat! Will let you know if anything is resolved. Thanks again for your input.

Regards

JFK -- P.S. like your siggy!
