Publisher -> Acrobat Professional?

I am not a Publisher user. I have purchased Publisher because the editor of
a newsletter I post to the web uses publisher. She sends me the Publisher
files, I open them in Publisher, use Publisher to generate PDF, then post the
PDF to a web site. Some users can view the PDF okay. Others get either a
blank screen or they view the file and the graphics are okay but the text is
too small to read. These same users can view PDF generated by Acrobat
Professional just fine. It is not a PDF 1.4/1.5 problem because at least one
of these folks is running Reader 8.0.

I would like to get the publisher document into a format that could be
accepted by Acrobat Professional so I could generate the pdf there.

Publisher runs on my PC and Acrobat Professional runs on my Mac.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Or...you could try the following freebie
which may solve the viewing problem.

Try this...

Download and install the following free PDF Creator.

PrimoPDF
http://www.primopdf.com/

With your new program installed...open your project
in Publisher and go to...File / Print.

On your Print screen...open the drop window and
select PrimoPDF as your printer.

Click...OK...now you will see the PrimoPDF screen
and you can browse to a save folder.

When you click...OK..your .pdf file will be created
in your save folder.

The resulting .pdf file can be viewed on any computer
that has the free Adobe Reader installed.

I've had group members tell me the same thing. Chances are the files are
kind of large and those people have dial-up. they wait 5 seconds and they
are firing off the nasty-grams.

Ewww nasty-grams...I hate when that
happens )

I'm thinking the Primo files will be smaller...
maybe that will help.

PostScript. Install some kind of generic PostScript driver on your PC,
create a PostSCript file, and then distill that on your Mac.

Until you compare like with like, you're not likely to find the source
of the problem.

I'd guess that the users who are having trouble reading the text are
running a lower screen resolution, and zooming to fit the page (or page
width or something).

John and JoAnn, Thank you so much! I did as you suggested and the problem
seems to have disappeared. I guess it was something funky about the pdf
plugin for publisher.

It may well have had something to do with file size - although I always warn
my dialup users that patience is a virtue:)

Ed,

The Primo solution seems to work, but for my education I'm going to do as
you suggest. I've downloaded a postscript driver from Adobe and will try
using Distiller. Thanks for this advice - I learn something new every time
something goes wrong:)

Do you have a recommendation for a postscrpt generator? I downloaded one
from Adobe but it doesn't seem to have a setting to generate color.

Sadly, the PrimoPDF solution seems to have solved the viewing problem for
the people that were having trouble viewing the pdf generated by the
Publisher plugin, but some who WERE able to view that version now cannot view
the version generated by PrimoPDF. They see the graphics but all they see
are the text boxes with a few letter "B"s scattered here and there.

I've written asking questions about their environment hoping that will give
me some clue. I'm getting pretty frustrated tryiing to find a solution that
works for all my readers.

One nice thing about Distiller - it has a variety of settings, including
e-book. You can greatly decrease the size of the pdf based on the
resolution you are using, especially if many images or graphics are
included.

Thanks, Mike. I used a Lexmark PS driver on the PC and Distiller on my Mac.
The file size was reduced from 174kb to 99kb. (174kb is what I got from
using PrimoPDF). I'm going to send this file to the people who were have
trouble viewing either of the earlier versions to see if I finally have a
solution.

It's been a few years since I went the ps to Distiller route but back
then I used a Linotype printer driver. I just tried the Microsoft Image
Setter with Acro 5.0 and it did a perfect job. Even 10 point TNR was
easily viewable at 88 percent screen display.

I use Cute Pdf 3.2 and Cute Pdf writer and most people can open it up. Or
print the Publisher version and scan it into a JPEG. The Cute Pdf works
better, but you can lessen the e-size better with the scanning into jpeg.
