Publisher could not save the file to the web....

Hello,
I hope someone here can help me!
I'm having the same problem as Steve who posted a simular thread a few days
ago but it received no response. I have had a look throughout the Help and
Support, Discussion Groups, Office Assistance etc but no luck with the
problem below:
This message comes up after I have gone through all the steps required to
publish to the web, it will spend about 10mins "Saving files to the web" then
it will stop and a box in the centre of the screen will pop up with this
message.....

"Publisher could not save the file to the Web, Check your URL or Network
connection and try again"
It's only happened in the last couple of days, I've published my website
quite a few times before and updated it and I didn't (not that I'm aware of
anyway) do anything different this time?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I am just guessing here. Have you recently installed the Windows XP Service
Pack 2? After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), some
programs may seem not to work. By default, Windows Firewall is enabled and
blocks unsolicited connections to your computer. This article discusses how
to make an exception and enable a program to run by adding it to the list of
exceptions. This procedure permits the program to work as it did before the
service pack was installed.

If this information helps, please post back. There seems to be an increased
number of people who have been having problems publishing their sites, even
when they used to be able to do so. Perhaps it has something to do with the
Windows Firewall.

Thanks David, I will give it a go, although I installed XP Service Pk2 last
year sometime and I haven't changed any of my firewall settings. I was able
to upload/publish my website over the last weekend its just been in the last
two days. I'll let you know how I get on.

G'Day again, I just completed the steps you listed, Microsoft Office
Publisher was already on the list as an exception, so still no luck.

Here is another article:
Troubleshooting Windows Firewall settings in Windows XP Service Pack 2:

Like I said, I am guessing here. Have you installed any other patches or
programs that might be interfering? I can't test this myself, as I use Pub
2000, and have not installed SP2.

There are some standard trouble shooting steps in publishing snafu's...

- check firewall settings, privileges
- if behind a network, verify with network admin that you have ftp
privileges
- reboot your machine (you may have a hung connection)
- verify you have the correct FTP url from the host
- verify the procedure -

- see if you can connect to the server using an ftp client (i.e. wsftp le)
to determine if this is specific to Publisher
- if possible try in http
- delete the ftp location and create a new one
- if http then delete the network place and create a new one
- log in host control panel and verify file and directory permissions are
read/write
- is the issue before or after the login is prompted and/or accepted. when
after a successful login the likely increases that the issue is on the host
side and not on your end
- verify that you have no page in the web publication that has "hanging"
objects, an object that straddles the document area and the scratch area.

Ok, problem is solved!
I had gone through and checked pretty much everything that was listed below,
it wasn't until I tried to use SmartFTP to try and load my website that it
told me that my hosting compay/server had aborted the operation due to me
exceding my disk space!
Now the reason I hadn't checked that earlier was because I had already
thought of that so I had deleted my old website all together, not thinking
this one was much bigger and still would put me over the limit. So anyway
this morning I upgraded my account and all is good! What a relief, something
so simple!

Another thing that threw me was that my hosting company had just finished a
major server upgrade which closed everthing down for about 4 days!

Anyway thanks for your input it all did help as I was able to eliminate a
number of potential causes plus if I hadn't followed one of the steps to try
uploading using an external FTP client, I would still be pulling my hair out!

So Thanks to DavidF and DavidB
