Have you looked at the spelling options to be sure you have them setup
correctly? Tools, Spelling, Spelling Options.
Check the language as well. Tools, Language, set language.

Do an Office Diagnostic in the Help menu if all else fails.

This was suggested by a previous poster
1. Open Outlook
2. Goto Tools
3. Trust Center
4. Add-Ins Menu (left pane)
5. Manage (bottom of window) -> select disabled Add-Ins -> go
6. Look for Add-In relating to speller or checker

Mary many thanks for your assistance.
The spelling options all appeared OK.
In Language set language was greyed out.
I am using Windows and Office XP. I could not find trust center in Outlook
but did find it in Publisher. There were no add-ins relating to spelling.
The diagnostic tool found one problem on my PC and corrected but this did not
change anything.
One quirk I noticed is no spelling errors are shown on first opening the
document only after I start editing then they all appear!

Still in trouble. I could not find a relevant update at the site you
recommended but did a forced update and got 3 which took about an hour to
install. This is rather strange as I am on automatic updates. These have
not changed the problem.
Thanks again for your help. Dick.

Do a repair from the control panel, Add and Remove Programs... Scroll down to
Office 2007. Is the custom.dic on your computer?
It is in a folder similar to this:
C:\Documents and Settings\<<user>>\Application Data\Microsoft\UProof (not sure
about the UProof, it could be just Proof) (Windows XP)

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\UProof (Vista)

I worked my way through your suggestions but was still in trouble so I tried
again to save the dictionary as unicode and it worked this time.
I opened the dictionary as a text file and edit the text to unicode. Saved
as unicode text then changed the extension to '.DIC' and this has worked.
It appears Word and Outlook Express are more tolerant of the file format
than Publisher.
Again thanks for all your help. Dick.
