publisher for mac

Hello,
I have a Windows user that uses Microsoft Publisher 2000. She needs to
share her Publisher files with a Mac user. I was told by our vendor to
purchase Office 2004 for Mac, but when I installed it I noticed there
was no Publisher for the Macintosh. Is it possible to install Publisher
on a Mac or is there another program I can use to allow the Mac to open
Publisher files.

Thanks for your help.

There's no native Mac application that can open Publisher files, AFAIK.
However, if you have Office 2004 Pro, you can install Publisher in
Virtual PC (which may be what your vendor intended).

Just so I'm clear on this: I would install Office 2004 Pro and then I
can also install Publisher 2000 on the Mac to make it compatible. I
want to make sure this is the right approach to take.

Thanks again.

For this route, you need Virtual PC, which emulates windows software. You
install Virtual PC on your Mac, VPC creates a virtual machine on your mac,
then you install a Windows operating system into the virtual machine, then
you would be able to install Publisher into the virtual machine.

Office 2004 Pro comes with Virtual PC--Office 2004 doesn't. But you can
also buy standalone VPC--some editions come with a windows OS, some require
you to buy a windows OS separately. Plus you would then have to buy
Publisher, or a Windows version of Office that included it.

Since you said your vendor sold you something, you may already have Office
2004 Pro, and I think the VPC it comes with includes the XP windows
operating system. Mactopia.com should have info on the VPC editions.

It's not really a question of it being compatible--it's the same
program--but you need the VPC apparatus to run it on a Mac.

Since it sounds like you are managing multiple users, it may be
easier/cheaper just to make the Mac user temporarily move to a different
computer running windows to deal with Publisher files.
