publisher not asking for password anymore

When I try to publish to the web, publisher (2003) goes through the motions
of saving but then I get the message that it cannot save, check URL or
network connection and try again. Publisher is not asking me for my password
anymore when I try to publish or when I am uploading files to the index
folder under 'My Network Connections'. Does anyone have any idea why this
might be happening? I have been updating my website for several years and
occassionally automatic anti-viral updates seem to mess up my settings. Is
it possible the problem is with my server or is this more likely my computer?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Assuming that you are using FTP uploading, then during the process if the
Log On As window does not automatically display or you get an error,
immediately go to File >Login As to open the FTP login prompt.

If you are using HTTP uploading protocol, or have *upgraded* to IE7, then
post back. IE7 does not support FTP uploading as it did...

I'm not sure what you mean (and I'm not much of a computer person). I don't
have the 'Login As' option under my file menu in Publisher. I did check my
IE and it is version 7. Does this have something to do with it?

IE7 doesn't support FTP uploading as did IE6.

Reference Prepare, publish, and maintain your Publisher Web site:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA100947601033.aspx
It is written for Pub 2007, but if you are using IE7 instead of IE6, then
the directions for using Vista would apply.

As you are using FTP uploading then consider downloading and installing the
free FTP client FileZilla:
http://filezilla-project.org/ It is likely to be easier for you in the long
run. Take the time to also download the excellent documentation and read it.

I wasn't able to figure anything out from that. It tells you how to do it
but not what to do if it doesn't work. Maybe I am using the HTTP protocol.
How would I know? I have just been updating my site automatically for years
without thinking about it.

That is because those articles don't describe a fix...they describe
alternative ways of uploading your site. As I said, you can't do it the way
you used to do it, because you *upgraded* to IE 7. The first link tells you
how to upload using either FTP or HTTP. As you have IE 7, the directions for
Vista apply.

The second part of my response suggests that you do neither of those things.
Its suggests that you download, install and use FileZilla for ftp uploading.

So you have two...actually three choices. If your host supports FrontPage
Extensions, then you can use HTTP uploading. This would be your only choice
if you are using a Publisher built form on your site. Your second choice is
to use FTP uploading as per the directions. Here is more information on HTTP
uploading protocol:
How to publish a Publisher web in HTTP:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/dbartosik/pages/80557.aspx

Your third choice, if you are using Windows XP and *upgraded* to IE 7, then
you can uninstall IE 7. Go to Add and Remove, and uninstall IE 7, and your
machines should roll back to IE 6, and you can upload as you used to. The
only problem with this approach is that eventually you will probably have to
go with IE 7, so you might as well learn how to upload without IE. I
recommend that you learn how to use FileZilla.
