Publisher Websites

Laura

Hello,

I'm in the process of creating a new website for my business, and when I
click on web page preview, the new website appears on the left portion of the
screen with a few inches of white space to the side of the website I
designed. To make it more understandable, my web page does not take up the
entire screen like it should. I don't know if this will be fixed when after I
publish it. Thank you for your help!

The fix to center pages using publisher 2000 and 2002
Publish to your hard drive
Edit the htm file(s) with notepad, wordpad or any other text editor and
replace <head> with

<head><center>

The fix to center pages using publisher 2003 and 2007
Publish to your hard drive
Edit the htm file(s) and replace </head> with

</head><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="2"
width="760"align="center"><tr><td>

" All above on one line "

Be sure that you edit the </head> line and NOT the <head> line

If you are using a page width different than 760 pixels change that number
in the above line

If you have multiple pages you might want to look at
http://www.emurasoft.com/replall/ a simple replace lines in multiple htm
files

Then ftp the files to your ISP

Laura,

Publisher creates website to a specific width. Also, it defaults to left
justified.

You can manually adjust the htm coding to center the webpages. It must be
done each time your replace the webpages due to editing.

You can make the centering very easy by using a replacing application to add
the centering coding. The following will help.

Change ISP to Server
I forgot to edit my canned response to centering (See David I did remember
even if I was late in doing so. I amended it just now after I posted it)
That is sort of an inside chuckle, David keeps me honest.

<smile> Speaking of keeping you honest, based on recent feedback, it appears
that you need to use the centering code string that we use for 2003 and
2007, for Pub 2002 pages. Given that you have Pub 2002, you might want to
test that out and update your boilerplate...

A convenient way to avoid having to "center" pages each time they are updated
is to put the content of each page in separate documents (created with
Publisher) which are then called up into iframes. I use this method
extensively.

If the length of the updated content exceeds the length of the iframe in the
carrier page, the carrier page must be adjusted either by generating a new
page with Publisher or, as I do, by simply adjusting the size of the
relevant <td> tags in the source Notepad document.

Using this technique also requires to have external links open in new
windows. Internal links to other pages work only if the other page content is
of the same length.

Geoffrey,

I think those who adjust their websites to center find two click of the
mouse pretty attractive. Can't get much easier than this.
