Publisher/Word locks up when inserting pictures from files

J

Jael

Inserting clip art works ok but inserting pictures from files causes Pub 2003
to lock up. Has been working fine up to some time this month. Save As also
causes lock up depending on file(?). Same problem in Word 2003. Pub 2000
& Word 2000 on same computer are ok. Norton's antivirus can not find
anything
nor was anything indicated by spy sweeper. Uininstalled Office 2003 and re-
installed - no help. Using an HP 3GHz Windows XP for home editions on a
small office net with one other computer (compaq), cable modem and two
printers. This has been working since last December. However the network
was installed last month. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Jael:
This is Bill and I'm responding to your post -- I had the same problem, and
my post is in the fifth down from yours (if this gets out before someone else
writes in.) At first I didn't uninstall Pub2003, just tried the repair
option, to no avail; then I logged in to this discussion group and found the
exchange below, between Seacrest and Mary Sauer. I found the fix she refers
to, installed it, but it didn't work for me; I have a similar problem in Word
2003, where I can't insert a file from My Documents into an open Word page. I
hope Mary or someone other monitor sees our posts and offers some help.
Good luck.
Bill

Thanks Bill. I read Mary's response and it just doesn't fit. As near as I
can tell my problem began about the time I installed my home network. I've
been using Pub 2003 for several months (I publish a 20 page monthly
newsletter). It worked fine last month. The only change I can relate it to
is my intranet. (two computers, two printers, cable modem and linksys hub).
I tried inserting a file and when the browser came up, I selected a folder
and it locked up.
Also when inserting a picture from a file into pub 2003, the title bar adds
"Print Publication" to the text.

Long shot but I wonder if the following info might be useful:

John Inzer,
Thanks for the input. Unfortunately it didn't help. I'm beginning to
wonder if this is a HP - Windows issue as a third party database has the same
problem when inserting pictures from files. I called them and they felt it
was a pop up blocker. But after clearing all blockers (and caches), the
problem remained and they are quite puzzeled (as am I).

Like I wrote - its suspicously timed with my home network. I really hate to
back it all out but ....

Hope someone out there has some more syggestions.
thanks,
Jael

Do you have Windows configured to install updates automatically?

Perhaps the following will explain & resolve your issue:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Easy Fix: Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix (MS06-015)"
to download a registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
in order to safely run the scripted fix.

Also, review the following:

MS06-013: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912812

Internet Explorer ActiveX compatibility patch for Mshtml.dll

Ed Bennet,
Yes I do have the automatic update active. Are you going somewhere with
this? (I hope). Office 2000 products (still active) work fine, it's only the
2003 suite that has the problem (both are MS Office Professional)

The security update will probably have been installed automatically by
Automatic Updates, and so Mary's response should fit.

That is the change, not your home network, and not HP's software.

Mary Sauer,
Thank you! The Kelly's Korner download seems to have fixed the problem.
I had tried the register dword fix as outlined in one of the previous
emails. Perhaps I copied the number wrong. Either way, it seems to be
there now.

Thanks to all who assisted, suggested and expressed interest.

I have a similar problem. Publisher 2003 hangs up when (i) open new file
(ii) save as (iii) insert picture from file (clip art is OK). This started
to happen ths week (April 19) after I had installed the latest microsoft
windows updates. I have re-installed Publisher but no change. I have also
used the system restore (to April 1) and this did clear the problem with
Publisher but left me with problems with McAffee virus scan so I cancelled
the restore.

Perhaps, then, you should read Mary's post in this thread, which deals with
problems caused by the rogue update.

Mr. Bennet,
Thank you for saving me the time to respond to Beacon Ed. I might however,
have been a little less condescending in my reply.

Different strokes for different folks...

(I don't mean to be condescending - it can just happen sometimes)
