publishing a page with a photo gallery

Please help!!

I am new at using Front Page 2003. I have a domain now so it is the first
time I have created a page with a web page editor like this. I had a friend
help me set up my frames and now I want to add a photo gallery I created to
that site. Do I just publish my web site? If so what do I select? When you
publish do you need to have all your files uploaded first? How does it know
where to find your pics after it's published?

Ok ok I know that's alot of questions but any help or suggestions will be
appreciated!

Thanks )

With your web open in FrontPage, Click View > Folders.
In the folder view panel create a new folder and give it a name.
Double click the folder to open it.
Import, or copy and paste, or drag and drop the images for soon to be photo gallery into
this new folder.
Then click File > New > More page templates and then select Photo Gallery.
Give the new photo gallery page name and then follow the instructions.

When done, click File > Publish Site and FrontPage will publish all the necessary files to
your web site.

Don't forget to link to your new photo gallery page from your "Home" page.

Thank you sooo much!

Do I need to make sure my pics are uploaded before I publish my page? I
have never published one from Front Page before.

FrontPage will automatically publish ( upload ) the images when you publish.

Ok apparently I am still doing something wrong. I wasn't sure about
this..."With your web open in FrontPage, Click View > Folders" I didn't quite
understand that. But I did make a new folder and I put all my pictures and
the photo gallery html file I made. When I went to publish it I opened that
folder and clicked publish but it was publishing everything I had even old
html files that weren't even in the folder I was in. Do I need to just
select them individually or something. What did I do wrong?

You have to have created a Web/Site first.

This will appear as a folder with a blue globe on it, and will reside on your harddrive usually within the My Webs folder.

Open that Web/Site
All your pages and folders for the web you want to Publish should be within the Web/Site ... c:\My Documents\My Webs\whateveryounamedyoursitehere

Then choose File | Publish Web/Site and enter your url you publish to like : http://www.whateveryourwebnameis.xxx

Yes, it will Publish all the files needed to make your web run...once you do a full publish then after that you can choose to pblish Changed Pages Only.

Ok ..just wanna make sure I am understanding this on my hard drive I have
this folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Angel\My Documents\My Web Sites
but I also have this ...
C:\Documents and Settings\Angel\My Documents\My Web Sites\mysite
inside of that folder. Both folders have alot of stuff that I didn't put in
there...should they be empty other than the files that I want to publish e.g.
my photo gallery html and my pictures? I have a site in frames but I did it
usin an old template from a friend and I just edited it with web o rama and
uploaded it with WS_FTP. I didn't publish it with Front Page.

I think what u were saying was that it was supposed to load everything at
first but there are alot of files that I have in this folder that I don't
want or need on my site. Should I just clear everything out?

Huh? You're not saying this are you?:
C:\Documents and Settings\Angel\My Documents\My Web SitesC:\Documents and Settings\Angel\My Documents\My Web Sites\mysite because I think that's kinda impossible.

It should be:
C:\Documents and Settings\Angel\My Documents\My Web Sites\mysite

IF your web/site on the host server has FP extensions installed you should NOT use WS_ftp...your life will much easier if you have extensions and use the Publish via http://www.yourwebname.com method I outlined previously. This method takes care of your links and folders associations so-to-speak.

FP creates files and folders that comprise the web/site, you should not mess with them, move them or delete them.

If you don't have FP extensions on the host then you will lose some functionality of FP web and will have to learn a different method of uploading your web via third party FTP (like WS_ftp or CuteFtp) or even FP's ftp.

Ok I understand what you are saying now I think. The problem is I am very
comfortable with FTP. I like to make my own folders etc. the past 8 years I
have edited code and used ftp. I have just never made a page from scratch!!
Ooooh I feel really stupid! Anyways let's try a different angle here if we
can. Can you tell if I make a photo gallery in FP and then rather than
publish it just use an ftp program like FP or WS_FTP to upload it will that
work? How do I do that if it will. I read some info on my server and the FP
extensions you were mentioning they don't like but they have a format you can
change to and use it but they say it could affect how you edit. I'm not sure
I want to do that. The only reason I was going to try FP is because I liked
the way the photo gallery looked. By the way, I don't know if it matters but
I have FP 2003. I'm sorry to be so much trouble!

Thanks again for all your help.

Using FTP will most likely crash the FP extensions on the server. There is no problem
creating folders with FP. But you do need to publish using http.

Well, you can do the same thing here.....except Frontpage takes some of the
work out of it...Publishing through FP itself is done by http:// mode not
with an external FTP program (you need to use http: mode if you use
features that use the FP server extensions such as the Photo gallery)
Otherwise you can use your favourite FTP prog. or use the FTP mode in FP
itself if you use *no* features requiring the server extensions.

The photo gallery I think uses FP extensions; therefore you need to publish
the pages (or the site) using Frontpage's http: mode.

Before you waste too much time using FP2003's photo gallery, set up
something small and quick, but large enough to require scrolling of
the results. Then look at it with Firefox, Opera and other browsers.
If you have friends using Macs, then take a look using their machines.

I had great plans to use the photo gallery. Then, I saw how bad it
looked in the other browsers and gave up.

As a result, I'm using a free gallery program called EGG -- Easy
Gallery Generator for my family photos.
