Publishing - "Cannot rename file" and other error messages

New to FP 2003 but have had some success publishing a Family Web Site at
Comcast.net.

I notice however when I add say a picture or a .wmv video when I go to
publish (either the entire site or the page that has changed) I frequently
get an error message stating that it cannot rename a file (typicaly a photo)
or that it has received a response from the server and to check that FP
Extensions are enabled (they are), or that the server has timed out.

Reading some of the other posts I have then checked the space allocation.
I'm using an account (with links to my other accounts) where I'm allocated
25mb per address. My "main" web site is around 20mb (with other accounts
containing larger files like .wmv videos linked back to the main site.)

When I receive the error message I publish again - it get a little farther
down stream - another error pops us, publish the entire site again and
finally it "takes" and publishes the entire site. I use the FrontPage / Share
Point services option and optimize the HTML by removing ALL HTML comments and
Leading White Space.

Is there a way around this multiple Publish dilemma?

Try publishing without the optimize feature. Sometimes it will get things
screwy. Does not lessen the size of your web much anyway. Also
recalculating hyperlinks will often resolve an issue like that. Check
filenames: No spaces, all lower case.

Thanks. Couple questions:

-When you say "recalculate hyperlinks" what do you mean. I run the
view>reports>problems>hyperlinks to check that all are valid. Is this what
you are refering to?

-Just about all my files (.jpeg mostly) have spaces (e.g. Lyla and Santa
2004.jpg) These are imported from My Pictures (and resized using MS Office
Picture Manager) Is there a quick way to remove spaces from file names?

-I assume you are advising to uncheck all optimize HTML options. Correct?

Tools / Recalculate Hyperlinks. Fixes other things also.
Does not always help but certainly will not hurt. I use it whenever I move
things around or rename stuff. Also when a web starts acting *flakee*.

Recalculate hyperlinks is a menu option on Front Page's
Tools menu.

There is a JIMCO addin called space remover that works well.
It is advisable to use all lower case also.

IRFANVIEW has been mentioned here for picture manipulation, also does batch
jobs.

Also mentioned here was to use .JPG not jpeg.

Yes, I NEVER optimize. See nothing to gain, besides can have some adverse
effects.

IMO the only safe Optimisation option is removal of leading whitespace. The
other options can have a detrimental effect on your pages, and some make the
result useless for backup purposes (I use the online site as one of several
backups for the local version).
The difference in page size (when removing leading whitespace) depends on
how the HTML mark-up has been formatted - it could vary between zero, and
several thousand bytes on a large page with huge indents. The amount of
space saved on a disc may be considerably less.

I have read somewhere (can't remember where, and do not know how accurate
this is ) that FP requires about 5MB of free space on the destination web
when publishing. If your using 20M out of 25M then that could be the
problem.
