Publishing - FP or HTTP

El tonino

I am ready to publish my first website

I am going to use frontpage, and have a webhost that supports full FP server
extensions (webhostqasp.com)

When I go to the screens on FP to publish there are several methods
The two options I am looking at are clicking on either Ftp. or Http. (the
Webdav does not seem to be applicable)

Reading the Inside and Out book, I am unsure what is best method and if I
publish using the wrong method will it stop some features working?

The book seems to state use "http" on one page but later says "Ftp only
method FrontPage uses to publish"

I am using Frontpage2003

I'm publishing to an inhouse server. When I try to publish using the IP,
i.e., to http://1.2.33.4, it says the server is not available, may not have
server exten. installed, etc.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Don't use the IP Address. Use the Domain Name. Also, check with your
server administrator and make sure the FrontPage Server Extensions are
installed.

I installed the FP extensions myself, so they are installed. If my server is
named WEBSERVER and it's on the ACCOUNTING domain, how do I publish?

Is there a difference between publishing to http vs. to a file system
(wwwroot)?

Thank you.

The IP Address should work if it is assigned to a specific web site on the server.

If you installed the FP Extensions then you should be publishing via HTTP so
you don't corrupt them. Ex: http://www.mydomain.com

If you do not have a domain name set up and you aren't planning on using any
of the features that require the FP Server Extensions then all you need to
do is copy all the files from your local drive, map to the network server
and paste them into the folder for your web site.

Is the IP address assigned to a single web site on the server, and have you actually installed the
FP extensions on this web site?

Open IIS, right click on the web site and choose Properties. Is the correct
IP address listed and not just "All unassigned"? Is that the IP address of
the web server?

HI

I had same problem and publishing using ftp. would not work

If URL up and running then it works a treat, I uploaded using http

What i found is everytime I installed frontpage onto server, if I tried to
load via ftp. then after failing I would try again and it would tell me FP
not installed

Using Http it worked, using Ftp never worked for me
