Publishing hangs at "listing pages" - tried every NG fix I can find.

stats:
-Using FP 2000 on XP Pro box with IIS 5.1. and FP 2002 extensions
-Server extensions are installed and have been refreshed.
-Publishing from a web folder on my local HD to internet server (also
running IIS 5.1 w/ FP 2002 extensions)

I have seen so many posts about hanging at "Listing Pages" but every
suggested fix I could find has not helped. Common sequence is choosing
publish (All or changed pages) enter user name and password, then FP
Displays the familiar "Listing Pages on http://localhost" - and then
nothing. It just sits indefinitely. It doesn't freeze as I can cancel
and quit, but never transfers a single file and never throws an error
message.

Things I have tried to no avail:
.. Delete all .tmp .web and .lck files
.. Emptied recycle bin
.. refresh extensions (both locally and at "mydomain.com"
.. stopped and restarted IIS 5.1 and rebooted
.. Recalculated hyperlinks locally and on remote web server
.. Ran a check on local extensions - no problem reported
.. Opened the remote web on net and tried File>Import from my HD files -
still hangs
.. Also tried drag and drop from my HD to website through FP
.. Had my ISP check the server and reset permissions - they could find
nothing wrong
.. Created a new web in IIS and copied just my basic web files (graphics
and html pages) to new web. Still can't publish.
.. Published remote web to a new folder on my HD, updated the necessary
files and tried to publish - no luck.
.. Uninstalled and reinstalled FP2K

I've killed an entire 8 hour day troubleshooting this. What else can I
try? What causes this "listing pages" hang in the first place? I've
let it go unattended for over an hour and it still just acts like it's
"listing".

Found out on my web host's community forum that someone had invaded the
host in mid-January and added javascript coding to customer's pages that
forced open a porn window. Yup, every single one of my pages had that
code. My site's not that big, but it took four days to repair it
because the server kept timing out. Same kind of symptoms you
mentioned. Had to go to a live update (actually finally got to use the
find and replace after it went down a zillion times) because it got to a
point where I couldn't publish my web site back to my computer or
publish the very old back-up copy to my host. Other customers on the
community forum also had similar problems. Some of the pros there said
it definitely was a server issue.

- or any thumbs.db files (delete them)

No popups or unwanted javascript that I can find. The site still runs
great, and there's no missing or changed content. It's not gone down,
and the response times when I ping the server are pretty good. In all
regards, it appears fine from a user's point of view.

Two new pieces of info since I posted last night are:

1. I attempted to publish before bed last night and this morning it had
finally pooped out (after who knows how long) with the following error
message: "Could not find a web server at www.MyDomain.com on port 80:
Please check to make sure that the webserver name is valid and your
proxy settings are set correctly. If you are sure that everything is
correct, the web server may be temporarily out of service." The server
is not out of service. I can ping it, browse it, and even open it in
FP - I just can't publish from FP

2. Then I tried a basic FTP client and I was able to access and
transfer files perfectly fine via FTP (something I otherwise wouldn't
do as it corrupts FP extensions, but I wanted to help rule out certain
server problems.)

Any new clues? I'm still baffled.

You need to contact your web host and ask them to run a check on the extensions for your account.

Connecting via FTP bypasses the FP extensions, so that just indicated the FTP server is functioning,
but has no bearing on publishing to the http server via FP.

Hey Thomsa,

My host ran a check yesterday and, at my request, refreshed the
extensions even though the check returned no error. I also had them
reset the permissions, but that had no effect either.

I understand FTP bypasses the extensions, but I was looking to rule out
some sort of communications problem with the server and for what little
good it does, FTP at least told me that at the most basic level files
could be transfered in both directions.

Granted my using FTP this morning may now require yet another refresh
of the extensions, but that's just a minor nuisance as it gave me some
insight as to whether to look at the server more or look at FP more.
I'm back to looking at FP as I just discovered I can publish via FP
from my pc at home (nearly identical configuration) so I still think
it's something local to my business PC's install of FP or something
conflicting with it.

What exactly causes this error in the first place?

You might want to view my tutorial on troubleshooting authentication
problems. Yours doesn't look like an authentication problem, but a network
trace might be very helpful to you.

I had the same thing happen and finally called our host tech support. He
could find nothing wrong but said they would re-install Front Page
Extensions anyway. Waited about an hour and tried to upload again and all
went well and has continued to do so...Evidently the FP extensions thingy
had become corrupt.. So call your tech support and ask them to do
that.......

Well, for the benefit of others I thought I'd share that I have
regained publishing ability. I tried so many different fixes, that at
the end of the day when I was finally able to publish, I wasn't sure
*exactly* what had done the trick.

It appeared to be a local problem, as suspected all along, and not a
problem with my web host. Basically it came down to creating a brand
new web folder on my HD via IIS and importing all my web site files
into this new web (not from any of the _vti_cnf folders, though) and
recalculating a few times. I fiddled with different importing
techniques before it finally worked - try a few (strangely, copy &
paste worked for me) - your mileage may vary.

Thanks to all those who contributed and offered their help. Especially
MVP Thomas Rowe! Not to kiss ass, but the man really went out of his
way to assist me and I greatly apprecate it. Thanks.
