Publishing in http

E

Eric

Despite the nice and easy directions at publishermvps.com, I cannot get my
site to publish to http instead of ftp. I originally wanted to do this so
that my forms would publish properly. My FPSE are installed and working. When
'Publish to Web' and 'Save As' http://www.mydomain.com and enter the login
and then try to save over my previous index, it gives me the following error:
"The folder that this web page would use to organize supporting files is
already reserved for use in the current location. Please choose a different
name or location for this web page."

Seems I'm stuck one step away from success. Any ideas?

Sounds like a server permissions issue.
Is this the first time you replaced the site files?
I assume the sub-folder there now is called index_files? Try turning off the
sub-folder option to publish. Or optionally go into your hosts control panel
file manager and delete the sub-folder before you publish.
If it is a case of Publisher not being able to write a new index_files
sub-folder then contact your host support about modifying the "write"
permissions.

Thanks David. There is no "index_files." Only _private and images folders (no
public folder, even), as well as some loose files that include index.html and
index.htm. Tried deleting those before saving once, and that didn't help.

Some background: I've had the site up for about a day now and have replaced
the files many times in FTP. This was, however, my first attempt to save the
files in HTTP.

If you have Publisher's sub-folder option on then it will write an
index_files folder. Do you have that option on or off?

the private folder indicates that FrontPage extensions are installed. As
documented on http://www.publishermvps.com - you need them if you want to use
a form page and/or use HTTP for publishing. Using FTP when FP extensions are
installed is poor practice, it typically results in corrupting the
extensions. Meaning the host has to reinstall them. The webmaster need to
pick one protocal (http or ftp) only. And only use that. Period. No back and
forth.

An images folder is not created by Publisher. It is however created by
FrontPage. Did you previously upload a FrontPage site? Or otherwise did you
manually create that folder? Publisher does not use an images folder.

Don't know why you are looking for a public folder?

I suggest you blow everything away and then decide on your protocol to use.
If you decide on http then have the host reinstall the extenions. Then do a
fresh publish using my directions.

Thanks. In a roundabout way, it worked--and well. Is there a way to alter the

get my
site to publish to http instead of ftp. I originally wanted to
do
this so
that my forms would publish properly. My FPSE are installed
and
working.
When
'Publish to Web' and 'Save As' http://www.mydomain.com and
enter
the login
and then try to save over my previous index, it gives me the
following
error:
"The folder that this web page would use to organize
supporting
files is
already reserved for use in the current location. Please
choose a
different
name or location for this web page."

Seems I'm stuck one step away from success. Any ideas?
