Publishing port info needed for router firewall

P

Pete Sheridan

I am using FrontPage 2000 to publish and maintain a web
site.

I have recently switched from Dial-up to DSL with an
Asante FR3004FLC router as the gateway for my home network.

I use this router because it has a very good firewall
built in to it but since installing it, I have not been
able to publish to the web site (or do a Windows update or
do an Office update, etc....).

In trouble shooting the problem, I reconfigured my system
to use the dial-up modem instead of DSL. I was able to
publish updates to the web (and do a Windows Update,
etc...). I then connected my ethernet cable directly to
the DSL modem and was able to publish the web updates (and
do a Windows Update, etc...). This told me that the
router was preventing me from publishing the web (and do a
Windows Update, etc...)when it was in the circuit.

I called Asante support and I was told that the router was
doing exactly what it was designed to do and that all I
had to do was open the ports needed by Frontpage to
publish and it would work.

I have searched the web and the Microsoft Knowledge base
for the port information and have found nothing! I have
sent a message to Microsoft Support about this issue with
no response except to say that they have received my
request and that it is in the hopper.

Does any one know what ports are used by FrontPage 2000??
Please pass the info to me via this newsgroup or directly
to me via my email.

I also need to have the same port info for Windows Update,
Office Update, and for downloading office plugins.

Thanks, Pete

Tom, Thanks for responding so soon.
I have already opened port 80 along with a number of other
commonly used ports. I still get the same message "Server
Connection Unexpectedly closed" . I get this message
after the publisher starts to list the pages in the web.

It just seems that the web server is waiting for an answer
it requested, (handshaking?? from my system) but my system
never heard that request. I just feel that another port
is required to be opened to listen for server responses.
Any Ideas? Like I said, It works directly via Dial-up or
direct connection to the DSL without the router.

I had also this problem when I was running under Windows
98 and now I am using Windows XP Pro. I upgraded to
Windows XP by installing a full install directly onto a
new HDD (not a Win98 to WinXP upgrade package).

Also remember that I'm having what seems to be the same
problem with Windows Update, Office Update, etc... under
the same conditions

Thanks, Pete.

Pete,

Probably not a helpful answer, but I must say that if you can't even get
Windows Update to work over this router, there's a bigger problem.

I'm using an SMC router/switch, and although I don't publish with FP from
home, I do use things like WU just fine. Do you happen to know anyone who
has a different make of router such as SMC or Linksys? It would be
interesting to see if this problem clears up with different hardware.

Jack, Thanks for your suggestion. I have already thought
about just getting another brand of router for trouble
shooting but I haven't done it yet.

Just for your information, Frontpage publishing is a
problem at work also, using a Cisco 1700 Series Router and
we have bypassed the router using a dial-up to the web
server to publish. Windows update & Office updates work
fine with the Cisco router.

If I don't get the problem corrected soon, I will probably
buy another router (probably a Linksys) & go from there
but I will not give up trying to get the answers I need to
allow me to run these apps correctly with any router.

Also, at lunch today at home, I was trying to down load
some 'clip art' from the Microsoft Office site and I had
to connect directly from my system to the DSL modem
(bypassing the Asante router)to get the clip art files.

Pete,
It's definitely a router issue, as I
use a Linksys NAT router here at the office
with zero problems.

Have you tried setting the router to assign
IP's to the computers using DHCP.
( if that is an option )

Hi Steve,
Yes I have the router set to automatically assign IP #'s
to each system that logs on(Dynamic addresses assigned
range: IP Addresses x.x.x.100 to x.x.x.199 and static
addresses assigned below x.x.x100) I have tried to run the
Apps using both a dynamically assigned IP Address from the
router DHCP server and a static IP address that I set up
for my system. Neither works!

This is probably going to be a dumb question or two but:
Is the router set to match the protocol required by the
DSL modem.
That is for example: PPoE

Also, are you publishing via http or ftp??

ftp uses port 21

Steve, No question is a dumb question when someone has
asked for help. Every question helps set a reference point
for the next group of trouble shooting steps and this time
I can't answer the first part of your question: Is the
router set for the required DSL protocol (PPoE). I have
to 'assume' that it is because the DSL setup is quite
simple but you know what 'assuming' does, 'it makes an a__
out of you and me'. I will check this item out when I get
home after work and let you know tomorrow (or maybe
tonight if I can).

Your second question; 'are you publishing via http or
ftp' I believe that I am using 'http'. My understanding
is that Frontpage uses 'http' as the default but not
wanting to assume too much, I will check that out also.

Thanks for the feedback and the items to check. I will let
you know ASAP. Pete

Pete,
I just thought of something else.
If the router is one of those that logs
on for you via the modem ( that is it
maintains an always on 24/7 connection )
you need to uninstall or disable the DSL
modem software that is installed in your machine.

Before I set up the Linksys router, I had the DSL software
installed in the computer, I had to uninstall it in order
for the router to work correctly.
Also make sure the IP address for the network card is
blank.

P

Pete Sheridan

Steve, I will check on your last suggestion. I did install
the Bellsouth software that came with the DSL modem. I
will de-install and try publishing.

Ref your previous questions: The router doesn't set up for
PPoE when using a standard DSL (always on) link. According
to the manual, PPoe is used with a DSL that is activated
on demand by the user. My DSL is always on 24/7. I also
checked to make sure which protocol I was using to publish
(http or ftp). I am using http as a default. The web
server that I'm using doesn't have ftp support running.

We'll keep trying & thanks again for the assistance, Pete

S

Stefan B Rusynko

But you still need to set the router for PPPOE mode to log in correctly to the DSL (w/ your user name password) unless you have
purchased a dedicated DNS from your provider
- even though you are "always on", periodically most DSLs reset their DNS and the router needs to log on again (set Keep Alive for
20 seconds)

Hello Stefan,
I will take your suggestion and try it ASAP.
I still have to de-install the Bellsouth software, as
Steve suggested and then try your suggestion which was
also suggested by Steve.

I will let you all know the results by Monday, 10/13/03.

Thanks again for your knowledge and assistance, Pete

Stefan, I tried your suggestions on 10/9/03. The result
was that I couldn't get to the internet with IE or
Outlook. The system just froze up. I then reconfigured
my router to DSL (alwasy on) and it worked as it has for
many months (I could surf the internet and receive email

I have requested help from the windows update support

Well Guys the problem is 'fixed'.
I talked to Microsoft, Asante and Bellsouth and nobody had
any new ideas .... but one statement from the Bellsouth
Tech made all the difference with this problem. I started
to ask for responses about PPoE, Routers, the modem that
they supplied to me, etc. The answers: 1. Yes we are
PPoe! 2. Routers? Don't know much about routers that we
don't supply ... but the DSL Modem is a router also!
What??? I asked! I knew that the problem had to be a
router to router incompatibility problem. I took out an
old 10MB hub I had, connected it to the Westell "Wirespeed
2100' Modem ethernet port, connected all of my systems to
the hub and all theknown communication problems on my
network have dissappeared!!! I have since started to get
all of the Documentation I need for the Westell
Modem/Router/DHCP Server/Firewall/etc.. so I can
configure it if needed.

I want to thank all of you for your help and guidance in
this matter. Pete Sheridan
