Publishing Problems

M

Meg B

I'm using the Publish to Web option (not the FTP). I've seen other people who
have this similar problem aswell but I have followed advice and I still end
up at the same thing.

When publishing my website I get logged on and the publishing begins. After
some time passes - about 20 minutes or so I get and error that I get every
time:
Publisher could not save the file to the web.
Check your URL or network connection and try again.

I'm positive my URL connection is correct, and second, I have a fast cable
connection.

I have had this error from the very beginning, but it's interesting that
after my first attempt I got the 'index' page - the home page with the
pictures that don't work and the page links that send you no where.

1) So, one guy says he has to turn his firewall completely off - so I try
that, to no avail.

2) I read that there are sub folders that also have to be published.. and
honestly - I've read Davids page at LEAST 3 times and it's never really
explained in clear language HOW to publish these mysterious sub folders...
Except for in the Options: Web tab to turn off the Organize selection... I've
tried that too!...

3) I've also ran the design checker - there is nothing in the gray scratch
areas.

I'm at wits end and ready to give up.. Please give me some help and please
dont just tell me to read Davids webpage - I've read it and re-read it.

David can certainly give better advice but here is a question for you.
How much space do have on your host?
Some free ones only allow 5 or 10 megabytes and you may be trying to put
up more than that.
If they have Quotas OFF you will not be able to see if you have exceeded
you space and will have to count for yourself what you think is up
there.

M

Meg B

That was one of my first thoughts is if I was taking up too much space. My
host allows up to 290 MB, my page is about 100 MB.
This is why I'm so frustrated-everything I try fails.

Your *page* is 100 MB??? That's _huge_..your server is probably timing out.

Alright.. I have more than one PAGE of info - the whole web site is about 21
pages altogether because I have pictures. Like I said, my host said I have up
to 290 MB.
Do you really think that is the sole cause? And if so, is my only recourse
to downsize??

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash\)

You might check the server logs and find out what file it's balking on. I'm
not as familiar with how Pub publishes to the web as I am with how FP does.
Sounds like whatever file it's choking on may be too big, or the server is
timing out.

Ok... here's my current situation.
I tried to publish via FTP (my first time) and still no luck. I don't get an
error but my web page does not change (you know - homepage with no pictures
loaded and links not working to other portions of the site). I'm guessing
this means that I'm not publishing the sub-folders somehow???
I'm confused because all the instructions I've read says to go ahead and
save the pages as index and when I do that nothing changes about the site.
Also in FTP I tried the URL a couple of different ways to make sure I was
getting it right. ftp://www.webpage.com or ftp://ftp.webpage.com and
ftp://webpagename.com..
The last thing is I don't know how to 'check the server logs'.
Any other ideas?

Meg, I'm coming into this a bit late so if you're beyond this point forgive
me.

I use Publisher 2000 and when I create a webpage it gets Saved as

File
Save as webpage

This operation creates an index.html and page1.html page2.html etc files.
It also creates several gif and possibly other image files.

All the files except the pub file then get uploaded to the server inside the
public_html folder (may be server specific).

I believe the uploading is done somewhat differently in later versions of
Publisher.

Don, ok me no expert on using Publisher to upload. Doesn't Publisher use FP
extensions? If so, if Meg is using third party ftp program it will break the
server extensions.

I use FP for webs, not Publisher.

Well I have it published now, I used Don's suggestion and it published.
However, I still have a problem that I am going to address in a newer post.
The site is so extreemly slow and the site is about 17 MB.

Rob,

Publisher uses FP extensions for HTML publishing, and the extensions are
necessary if you use a form on a page in a Publisher site. However if there
is no form, you can FTP publish, and yes, that does/can break the
extensions. I think that one of the reasons David Bartosik recommends HTML
publishing is that the user is less likely to not upload some of the code
and supporting files.
