pulling graphics out of Word documents

Whats the proper or best way to take a graphic that was put into a word file?
When i request images from people (jpg, tif, etc...) people just LOVE to
send them inside of a word doc which is not fun. Ive just never known if
there is some correct way to take the image files out and be seperate from
the doc file
