Purging deleted messages

I have an iphone and found that all my space was being taken up by old
emails! When I went to outlook to purge I found that the EDIT<Purge Deleted
Messages does not work! I have deleted the messages, they have the line
throught them, but when I click the purge, it asks if I want to delete
permanently and I click "OK" then nothing happens and they're all still
there! Any ideas?

Are you in the folder where the messages are? Edit, purge only works on the
currently selected folder.
