Putting symbols automatically

I have a spreadsheet I created with a thousands of number codes. Now I need
to put "* to the beginning and *" to end of the code. How can I do this?

i.e.
123-23 to "*123-23*"

Please help.

Maybe a helper column:

="*" & a1 & "*"

And drag down.
