PWA 2007 ActiveX problem post-SP1

Astro Boy

All,

We've installed SP1 to our MOPS 2007 environment recently. Since we
did so, a large number (35-40%) or our users are getting prompted to
install ActiveX controls whne they navigate to Project Center,
Resource Center, and some other views.

I've read here that SP1 requires new ActiveX controls. Fine, makes
sense.

The problem is that most of our users cannot install the controls in-
line (they all have admin rights to their local machines, so they
should be able to install them). We have gone thru the many-step
manual process for manually installing ActiveX controls. This works
for some users and does not work for others. A subset of the users who
were able to manually install the ActiveX controls are then prompted
to install the controls again, requiring the same manual, 19-step
process to REinstall, which, again , works for some and not for
others.

PWA is in Trusted Sites, and Trusted Sites is set to Low security.

Some updates:

1. We tried to delete the controls from IE Add-ons, but don't see them
appearing there. I'm looking for controls that contain pj*, but am not
seeing anything there.
2. We had a domain admin sit down at a machine where I could not
install controls with my logon. He got the same error I do.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Are browsers IE6 SP1 or later ?

Have you tried manually registering the controls ?

Hi Paul. Thanks for your input.

Yes, all users are on IE7.

We have manually copied the controls. We have also executed the
lengthy process detailed here:
http://www.projectservertips.com/Enabling_ActiveX_Controls_on_the_Client_in_Secure_Environments.htm

I've asked our Infrastructure team to explore using Altiris (we don't
use SMS) to distribute the controls, similar to the blog entry you
posted.

What I don't get is why this is all of a sudden a problem. It's
clearly related to SP1 - we had no trouble of this sort prior to
installing the Service Pack. Has anyone else encountered this? Does
anyone have any theories as to what's going on?

Thanks!

Astro Boy:

Have you tried deleting the objects from a DOS prompt? Try executing "del
pj*.*" (no quotes) in the downloads folder.

Thanks for the input, Gary. We just tried deleting the objects from
the command line and succeeded. However, our users STILL can't
reinstall the new controls. They get "The ActiveX controls for Project
Web Access cannot be downloaded correctly..."

The basic facts: Users have admin access to their machines. PWA is in
Trusted Sites for all users, and all users have Trusted Sites security
set to Low. There is no policy, either at the user or machine level,
which prevents ActiveX controls from being loaded.

We are out of ideas here. Does anyone else have other suggestions?

Astro Boy:

Assuming that the PWA site is in the trusted sites zone, make sure that in
the custom level security that:

Download Signed ActiveX controls should be "prompt" or "enable"
Rim Active X controls and Plugins = "enable"
Script Active X Controls marked safe.... = "enable"

Make sure that popup blockers and firewalls are disabled.
