What is the appropriate use of the Custom Duration 1-10 options in the PWA
Format Gantt Chart feature?

.....or are those just some legacy feature that aren't supposed to be used?

Yes Andrew there are, you where able to to create duration custom fields
which could have been used fo rhte custom gantt charts
