(Excel 2000)

I have an Excel chart and I want the title to be based on
a cell value in another sheet. How do I do that?

Thanks,

To add worksheet text to a chart:
1. Click on the chart to select it, or select the chart title
if one exists.
2. Type an equal sign (you'll see it appear in the formula bar)
3. Click on the cell that contains the text for the chart
4. Press the Enter key.
5. Position the textbox where you'd like it in the chart,
and format as desired.

Hey Debra, thanks for responding.

When I try that, it either treats it as a literal value
(ie. puts "=A1") or gives me an error when I try to enter
it in the formula bar. When I try to insert a function
(insert > function), I don't have function as a choice.

BTW, referenced cells before so I know I'm doing that part
right. It just doesn't seem to work with the chart title.

If you click on the cell, as I suggested, the sheet name will be
automatically included in the reference -- =Sheet1!$A$1
This is required for the formula to work. So, if you prefer to type the
reference, enter it in this format.

I have done this before and found that it doesn't work in the chart title box. If you just select the chart itself and then type "=", then select the cell, then press "ENTER", it should work. It will place the text box in the center of the chart screen and then you will have to move it where you want it.

Unless there is a version-specific problem, it works just fine. For a

Chart Title' page of my web site.

This appears very simple but I can't get this to work...
Tried "=Sheet1!$A$1" but the title appers as =Sheet1!$A$1
not a value

I'm using Excel 97 is this the problem?

Did you click on cell A1 to create the reference?
If you typed it, don't include the quotation marks.
