Quartz something

I remember when I got 2001, where was something about quartz smoothing or
something I did which improved text screen quality. What was it I don't
remember? Text in 2004 seems not as good as in X, but problem is even worse
in entourage.

Office 2004 takes its font smoothing settings from the system settings
(System Preferences/Appearance).

So that thing about quartz or whatever is history? I have the default set
to standard best for ctr ( I use ctr) -- not much to do beyond that I
suppose. Any opinions on look of text in word or entrouage? Thanks

No, Quartz refers to a layer of OS X, specifically the windowing system,
and it includes anti-aliasing Text. See:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/quartz/

I suspect they just dropped "Quartz" 'cause nobody but a few geeks
understood what it meant.

You could increase the font size in the Turn off text smoothing for font
sizes XX and smaller.

Just for fun, I set that to 12 instead of 8 and tested it in Word with 12
point--copperplate-- font and did not see a difference on screen at all.

Try closing and reopening the document.

Well I typed a lot of stuff at 8, then 12, saved doc. Closed and reopened,
didn't notice anything, but perhaps I'm missing something. What should I be
looking for?

For me, using the Copperplate font, there's a stark difference between
12 pt type smoothed and unsmoothed. The unsmoothed looks far more jagged.

It doesn't matter whether smoothing was on when the text was typed, just
whether it was on when Word opened. (You may need to explicitly close
the System Preference pane to effect the change.)

if you want OS9/ATM (Type Manager) quality fonts in any program in OSX download and
install two Utilities one is calle APE or Appearance Extension (Free). and a $10.00
extension called "Silk"

Install both as directed. The open silk and set up for Application you want it to
work with and not as desired.

Next go to Appearance control panel and set smoothing to Fine or Standard. Then
close and restart computer.

Makes type look like it was typed with a Diasy Wheel Type Writer. Nice ancrip and clean.

gets rid of the &^%*# fuzzy look OSX's Quartz engine imposes upon type.
