Que Latency

Good morning,

MS Project 2007 EPM version customized for our company's environment.

Are there any Microsoft or 3rd Party SNMP agents or probes that will monitor
the server's que and then automatically rectify the problem, or IM/email/page
the Admin so he can respond ASAP?

I (user) run into que latency issues when saving/checking in files because
someone else's file is problematic and is causing the clog. I'm told that our
Admin patrols the que looking for problems that surface which to me sounds
like an ancient practice. If he spots a problem or a good samaritan like
myself sends him an IM or email with a screen shot showing I've been in que
postion #18 for the past 15 minutes try to save my 59 line or 260 line
project file, he'll then take action. When I asked further, if the Admin just
deletes the problem child or with his Admin priveleges and tools, can he
resurrect the problem child or just delete it to free up the que. If he can't
fix the problem, it's forwarded onto our Operations area, which I assume is
IS. Once it reaches them, I'm not sure what they can do. Thank you - any help
is much appreciated.

Hi RayG,

How about Microsoft's system center? Note that just restarting the queue
can lead to data loss, so you're better bet is to resolve the issue that is
clogging the queue...

If this is a frequent problem, then attacking it at the source is a better
option. Most often failed queue jobs indicate bad schedule data. By bad I
mean non compliant to the PMI College of Scheduling best practices. Slow
processing might also be attributed to the way you're using the system in
general or your use case may require better hardware than you have. A
well-tuned Project Server system with a trained user base shouldn't require
constant queue patrol.
