Queries or Pivot table ?

I have to do a payroll program and I want to do it in
Microsoft Access. However, I don't know how to use the
mathematic functions in this program. I know that in Excel
you just go to the cell and input the formula where you
want your results. But in Access it seen to be a little
more complicated. I been trying to used the queries and
pivot tables, is not working for me.I will appreciate if
somebody can give some elementary examples such as
adding , subtraction, multiplication and divitions.

Please HELP ME...
