Query and then populate

I'm trying to create a form or report in Infopath in which users can type
their last name, click a button and the status for their vehicle will appear
without them having to go through several steps. Is this possible or should
I use a different program? Thanks in advance for any assistance

Yes, this is possible. However, it does not sound like you will want to
populate a form and then store the form data somewhere. You're just looking
for a data retrieval program. Am I right? If this is the case, I would not
recommend using InfoPath, but for example, if the data is being retrieved via
the web, just create an ASP.NET page to retrieve and display the data.
InfoPath is suitable as a data capture tool, rather than a reporting tool.
