Query and Value List

I have made a form based on a query based on three tables that has a value list combo box. When I run the query itself it runs as it should and where there is no value in this particular combo box, it appears blank. However, when I make a continuous form based on that query, anywhere the query result was blank (as it should have been), the form shows the first value in the value list. In addition, every three or four records has this value highlighted in black. Is there some glitch when representing a value list field on a continuous form?
