Query modifies itself

In previous versions of Access I could use hidden columns
to sort the dynaset a particular way. In XP, when I do this
and save the query, Access "redesigns" my query, often
using different or fewer columns to sort by. The resulting
dynaset appears to be correct either with my query or the
redesigned query. Is there any way to turn off the XP
function that appears to optimize the query so my version
will be saved?
